2026 Turf Handicapping
- The favourite has won four of the past 10 races, finishing second twice and third once in that span
- Last year produced the first double-digit winner in 13 years, six of the last 10 winners were at 5-1 or less
- Eight of the past 10 winners had won their previous start, one finished second and one finished third
- European-bred horses have swept the top three placings three times in the past 10 years, and taken two-of-three placings four other times
2026 Turf Handicapping: Diamond Necklace Race Odds: 3-1
After reeling off six straight wins to start her career, Diamond Necklace was beaten in her last two, including finishing third last out in the (G1) L’Arc de Triomphe, the biggest race in France.
In both those races she caught soft ground that may have been her undoing, as the two races prior to that were probably her best efforts, on turf rated good-fast and firm. She should be getting a firm track at Keeneland on Saturday.
2026 Turf Handicapping: Bay City Roller Race Odds: 5-1
Finishing just ahead of Diamond Necklace in the l’Arc was Bay City Roller, and in his case the softer footing may have been to his advantage.
Following that he came back and ran third beaten 5 1/2 lengths in a Group 1 stake at Ascot. He only had 13 days between those races, so when he runs on Saturday it’ll make it three races at 1 1/2, 1 1/4 and 1 1/2 miles in 25 days. That’s a tough schedule.
2026 Turf Handicapping: Benvenuto Cellini Race Odds: 6-1
Similar to Diamond Necklace, Benvenuto Cellini’s last two races were on soft ground, and he wasn’t much of a factor in either one. He finished ninth in l’Arc, although he was only beaten by 4 1/2 lengths.
He was very good earlier in the summer, winning the (G1) Irish Derby over Christmas Day who was coming off a win in the (G1) Epsom Derby. If he can regain some of that form, he’ll be coming late and could get a piece of it.
2026 Turf Handicapping: Tiffany Race Odds: 6-1
Six-year-old mare Tiffany hasn’t necessarily faced the highest level of competition in her 19-race career, but she gets results, finishing first or second 16 times.
Unique among most of the Euro contenders here, she has a US race under her saddle, winning last out in the (G2) Turf Cup at Kentucky Downs where she beat Ethical Diamond, the defending BC Turf champ. She’s also something of a specialist at the distance, having made seven straight starts going 1 1/2 miles and nine overall, winning three and running second six times.
Here’s My 2026 Turf Free Pick
I’m a big fan of turf racing and to me this, rather than the Classic, is the highlight of the Breeders’ Cup weekend.
Last year produced a win for the ages when Ethical Diamond, who only three races prior had been going over hurdles, surged through the stretch and caught everyone by surprise to win at odds of 28-1.
History suggests we’re not likely to see that kind of bomb again this year, but I am going to take a bit of a shot with Tiffany. I don’t expect there will be much pace on early, and she’s fast enough to stay right there with the leaders, joined perhaps by Bay City Roller. She obviously has no issue with the distance, and has a decent finishing kick.
It is a concern that under a similar setup she was beaten by that one by seven lengths a year ago, but that was on yielding ground and think she’s both better than she was then, and will appreciate the firmer footing at Keeneland.
