2026 Mile Handicapping

• • The favourite has won five of the past 10 races, finishing second once and third once
  • Eight of the previous 10 winners were at odds of 7-1 or lower
  • Four horses had won their previous start, three finished second and two finished third.
  • Four winners had previously won the Woodbine Mile
  • Trainer Charles Appleby and jockey William Buick have teamed up to win four of the past five races

2026 Mile Handicapping: Notable Speech Race Odds: 7-5

Last year, Notable Speech won the (G1) Woodbine Mile by 1 3/4 lengths, then went to Del Mar where he won the BC Mile by 1 1/2 over a runner who went on to win his next race.

This year Notable Speech won the Woodbine Mile by 1 1/4 lengths – in a race that was faster than in 2025 both time-wise and speed figure-wise – and now comes to Keeneland looking to repeat. He’s been the favourite in all  seven of his last races, both in North America and in the UK.

2026 Mile Handicapping: Lake Forest Race Odds: 6-1

Lake Forest got a bit unlucky last out in the Coolmore Turf Mile at Keeneland when he got caught up in traffic trouble late and finished second by 2 1/4 lengths behind Rhetorical, who he’ll face here again.

Prior to that he was beaten by 2 3/4 lengths by Notable Speech in the (G1) City Of Troy Stakes, going seven furlongs. He’s been first or second in 12 of 21 lifetime starts while putting more than $4.5 million in the bank. The big concern with him is that he’s o-for-5 at this one mile distance with one runner up finish.

2026 Mile Handicapping: True Love Race Odds: 8-1

The last out winner of the (G1) Prix de l’Foret in France, the filly True Love also won the (G1) 1000 Guineas Stakes at Newmarket back in May, beating the boys in the top UK race for three-year-olds.

While she may be a bit better on softer ground, she has won three of seven races on turf rated firm and she’s been first, second and third in four starts at the one mile distance.

2026 Mile Handicapping: Deterministic Race Odds: 8-1

The front-running Deterministic has won at a distance as far as 1 3/16 miles, but he’s very good at one mile, winning three and finishing second twice at the distance.

He was on a six-race win streak dating all the way back to May 2025 until he ran into Notable Speech last out in the Woodbine Mile where he was second, beaten 1 1/4 length despite posting a career best Equibase speed figure.

Here’s My 2026 Mile Free Pick

It’s difficult to get past the defending race champ here. He ticks all the boxes in the previous winners’ profile, and he’s already beaten most of the top contenders in here, with the Woodbine victory demonstrating that he’s at the very top of his game.

So I’m not going to get cute and try to beat him, but I’ll try to get some exacta value with True Love. She may well be overlooked at the betting windows, while Deterministic will likely be bet down from his morning line, as all the American money comes in on the hometown hope.

In addition to these four, I might look for a way to throw Puerto Rico into the mix in exotic wagers.
