2026 Dirt Mile Handicapping
- The favourite has won five of the last seven races and finished second and third in the other two. In the three previous races the favourite was off the board.
- All five winning favourites were at odds of 2-1 or less. There has only been one double-digit winner in the past eight races, and three in the last 10
- Six of the past 10 winners had won their previous start, four others finished second
2026 Dirt Mile Handicapping: Further Ado Race Odds: 2-1
One of several in here who tried the Triple Crown trail, there was some thought of Further Ado trying the Classic, but winds up here after running second in the (G1) Pennsylvania Derby.
The problem might be the mile is just too short. He tried shorter early in his career to no avail, eventually breaking his maiden at 1 1/16 miles and since then he’s never gone less than that. He’ll be there at the end, but just might run out of race track before he gets to the front. He is two-for-two at Keeneland.
2026 Dirt Mile Handicapping: Bracket Buster Race Odds: 7-2
Bracket Buster comes off a second-place finish in the Parx Dirt Mile, his only try at the distance in 13 lifetime starts. He was two lengths behind a winner that came back to win his next start.
Prior to that he won the West Virginia Governor Stakes by 15 lengths off a nine-month layoff against what wasn’t actually a bad field. He has a win and a second-place finish in three starts at Keeneland and has been training very well there since back in August, so he just might have an affinity for the track.
2026 Dirt Mile Handicapping: Chunk Of Gold Race Odds: 8-1
He doesn’t win much – only three victories in 13 starts – but Chunk Of Gold has lots of early speed that gets him into contention, and he’s run second eight times in those 13 tries.
There’s not a lot of other speed signed on here to challenge him, and if he gets away with soft fractions he just might be able to steal it in the front end. He’s cutting back from 1 1/8 miles last out in the (G2) Lukas Classic, where he led half the race and ultimately ran second.
2026 Dirt Mile Handicapping: Iron Man Cal Race Odds: 12-1
Iron Man Cal is an intriguing entry here, in that he’s the only horse in the field with a proven record at one mile. He’s tried the distance seven times and has won three and finished second twice.
The caveat is that all those races came on the turf. He’s tried dirt his last two and ran third in the (G2) San Diego Handicap at 1 1/16 miles, and last out went wire-to-wire to win at seven furlongs in the (G2) Pat O’Brien Stakes.
Here’s My 2026 Dirt Mile Free Pick
The Dirt Mile is a bit of a compromise race on the Breeders’ Cup lineup, in that many of the entries over the years are horses that aren’t quite good enough to compete in the 1 1/4 mile Classic, but lack the speed to win the six furlong Sprint. So they end up here.
Such is the case this year, as the top three listed above have a combined record of two starts and two second-place finishes at the distance. That’s from a combined 36 lifetime starts.
I’ve always felt the mile is a bit of a specialty distance, although perhaps more so on the turf than dirt. And although recent history hasn’t been kind to long shots, I’m going to lean on proven success at the mile and make Iron Man Cal my big hunch play of the day.
His recent outings have shown that he can handle dirt, and looking at his past performance lines, it almost seems like the connections made a decision this summer to point him toward the race, rather than having it as a default option, like some of the others. So I’ll take a swing.
- Iron Man Cal
- Bracket Buster
- Further Ado
- Chunk Of Gold
