2026 Distaff Handicapping
- The favourite has won four of the past 10 races and finished second twice
- Seven of the past 10 winners were at odds of 4-1 or less, with only one double-digit winner in 10 years
- Eight of 10 winners had won their previous race, one finished second and one finished third
- Three winners had previously won the Juddmonte Spinster Stakes, one finished second in that race
2026 Distaff Handicapping: Nitrogen Race Odds: 6-5
Never out of the money in 18 career starts, Nitrogen is a graded-stakes winner on both turf and dirt and was the champion three-year-old filly in the US last year, when she won six of nine starts and was second in the other three.
That list includes the 2025 version of this race, where she ran second beaten by 5 1/2 lengths. Two back she took on males and ran second to BC Classic contender Sovereignty after leading into the stretch. She was an easy winner last out in the (G2) Beldame Stakes for fillies and mares at this distance.
2026 Distaff Handicapping: Fully Subscribed Race Odds: 8-5
Like Nitrogen, Fully Subscribed has never been out of the money in 10 lifetime starts, winning six.
She’s on a three-race win streak with the last two of those in Grade 1 races, and last out captured the Spinster Stakes on the Keeneland dirt and at this distance. She’s won five of seven going 1 1/8 miles, but back in June was beaten by more than 12 lengths by Nitrogen in the (G1) Ogden Phipps.
2026 Distaff Handicapping: Scottish Lassie Race Odds: 15-1
She doesn’t quite have the winning resume of the top two here, but Scottish Lassie hasn’t shied away from tough company in her career and has been in the money eight times in 10 starts, with three wins.
She’s been second in her past two, including last out in the (G1) Personal Ensign at Saratoga. The problem for her is that in both of those last two races she was beaten by Fully Subscribed.
2026 Distaff Handicapping: Super Corredora Race Odds: 15-1
The winner of the BC Juvenile Fillies to close out her season last year, Super Corredora had a rough start to 2026, finishing well back in sixth in her return last February, then essentially stopping in her next start in March.
She was away from the races for more than six months after that, but seems to have regained better form in her return in the (G2) Zenyatta Stakes at Santa Anita in late September, taking the field wire-to-wire for the win. She stretches out here beyond 1 1/16 miles for the first time.
Here’s My 2026 Distaff Free Pick
This is a really tough call for me. Realistically I think there are only two horses that can win, and I’ve gone back-and-forth trying to play out the scenario of how the race might unfold and what that will mean for both Nitrogen and Fully Subscribed.
There’s more speed signed on here than not, and if Nitrogen has to deal with a pressured pace, it sets up for Fully Subscribed to come over the top into the stretch and win. For her career, Nitrogen has won twice going 1 1/8 miles, but has run second four times.
But the other question is can anyone else here really go with Nitrogen and apply that pressure? The males couldn’t do it two starts back in the Whitney, and it took the effort of the best dirt horse in the US to run her down in the lane.
Ultimately it came down to the fact any of her last three races – two of which she went wire-to-wire, and the Whitney where she almost went wire-to-wire – wins this. If she replicates those efforts, there’s nothing the rest of the field can do.
