- Nine of the past 10 winners were at odds of 9-2 or lower
- Seven of the last 10 winners had won their previous start, two finished second and one third
- Only one horse (Tiznow in 2000-2001) has ever won the Classic twice
2026 Classic Handicapping: Forever Young Race Odds: 2-1
The defending race champ Forever Young will try to become the first horse in 25 years – and only the second ever – to win the Classic back-to-back.
He comes to this in top form after winning the (G1) Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park by 3 1/4 lengths. That was his fourth win in five starts, a stretch that includes the Classic last year. For his career he’s won 12 of 16 races. He’s never been off the board in eight races at this 1 1/4 miles distance, with four wins.
2026 Classic Handicapping: Sovereignty Race Odds: 5-2
The 2025 Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes and Travers Stakes winner Sovereignty took three starts to get his first win of 2026, but he was dominant in that one, taking the (G1) Whitney Stakes at Saratoga by 4 3/4 lengths.
He suffered a foot problem after that which caused him to miss a start, so this will be his first race in almost two months. There was some concern how he was recovering and training up to this, but his last workout was solid. He will race with a patch on his hind foot. He’s a perfect three-for-three at 1 1/4 miles.
2026 Classic Handicapping: Knightsbridge Race Odds: 9-2
A bit of a late bloomer, Knightsbridge only became a consistent graded-stakes-level horse toward the end of his four-year-old season last year, but he has been very good since then, winning five of seven including a last-out 6 1/2 length win in the (G1) Pacific Classic.
That was his first try at this 1 1/4 mile distance. Prior to that he took the field wire-to-wire to score by 10 1/4 lengths in the (G3) Monmouth Cup at 1 1/8 miles.
2026 Classic Handicapping: Golden Tempo Race Odds: 5-1
The come-from-behind winner of both the 2026 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, Golden Tempo was once again closing late last out in the (G1) Travers at Saratoga in August, but couldn’t quite get to the leaders and finished third, beaten 2 1/4.
He’s won four of seven lifetime and two of three at this distance. He’s a three year old who will be taking on older horses for the first time.
Here’s My 2026 Classic Free Pick
Having only seven starters in a race this prestigious takes a bit of the fun out of, and the scratch on Thursday of Magnitude changes the pace complexion a bit, but there are still a couple good storylines to follow. Can Forever Young join Tiznow as the only two horses to ever win the Classic twice? And how will things play out between the past two Kentucky Derby winners, Sovereignty and Golden Tempo?
How I how see it going is with Napoleon Solo going to the lead, pressed by Knightsbridge and perhaps long shot TO Password. Forever Young should also be fairly close, tracked by Sovereignty.
On the clubhouse turn Knightsbridge takes over, but he in turn is passed by Forever Young at the head of the stretch. Sovereignty looms large and starts rolling, as does Golden Tempo. At the sixteenth pole Sovereignty goes in front and wins from there. Forever Young hangs on for second, Golden Tempo rallies for the Show money, while Knightsbridge fades to fourth.
- Sovereignty
- Forever Young
- Golden Tempo
- Knightsbridge
