2026 Turf Sprint Handicapping
- The favourite has only won twice in the past 10 years and hit the board two other times
- In six out of 10 races the winner has been at double-digit odds between 10-1 and 42-1
- Fillies or mares have won four of the past 10 races
- Five of 10 winners had won their previous start, one finished second and one finished third
2026 Turf Sprint Handicapping: Comanche Brave Race Odds: 3-1
The late-running Comanche Brave comes in off two straight wins – and three of his last four – with the most recent of those two being at the Group 1 level.
The last of those came over a yielding turf, while the second last was on firm turf, so any type of footing isn’t a problem. He hasn’t necessarily been taking on the best that Europe has to offer, but he’s with a trainer who wouldn’t ship across the pond if he didn’t think he could win.
2026 Turf Sprint Handicapping: Cy Fair Race Odds: 8-1
The winner of last year’s Juvenile Turf Sprint, Cy Fair has tried this distance five times and won three, finishing second once and third once.
Last out she ran into traffic trouble and ran sixth in the (G2) Music City Stakes at Kentucky Downs, but she was only beaten two lengths and was just behind two horses that came back to win their next start. Otherwise she’s never missed the board on seven starts, twice beating males.
2026 Turf Sprint Handicapping: Joe Shiesty Race Odds: 10-1
Speedy front runner Joe Shiesty comes in riding a two-race win streak including last out going 5 1/2 furlongs at Keeneland, where he was headed late but fought back to win by a half-length.
That was his second win in four starts at the track, and he’s hit the board eight times in 13 tries at the distance. He’ll be gunning for the lead when the gates open and trying to take them as far as he can.
2026 Turf Sprint Handicapping: Shisospicy Race Odds: 15-1
The defending race champ Shisospicy blew them away last year when the race was run at 5 furlongs at Del Mar winning by 2 1/2 lengths. That’s a huge margin in a short sprint on the turf.
She only made one start so far in 2026, way back in May when she was a well-beaten seventh. Whatever her problem was there has kept her away from racing for six months, and lack of fitness might be an issue. But she’s been training well, including running a four-furlong bullet in 46.93 on September 26, the best of 113 that day.
Here’s My 2026 Turf Sprint Free Pick
Notably absent from the list above is ML favourite Bacio, for a couple reasons. For one, there’s this weird thing whereby as a US-bred he’s never even tried graded-stakes racing on this side of the pond, but he went to the UK this summer and won twice, including the (G1) Nunthorpe Stakes. Both those wins came at 5 furlongs on straight courses, and that could be a factor.
Also, he’s partly owned by the huge MyRacehorse syndicate, and every fractional owner and his brother will be betting him. Whatever his chances to win the race, he’s going to be a huge underlay.
So I’ll just ignore him, and if he beats me I’ll offer congratulations.
The race profile suggests you can price shop here and that the girls have as much chance as the boys. With that in mind I’ll land on Cy Fair. I think she can sit a good trip behind the speed and get first run down the lane. In 2020 Golden Pal won the Juvenile Turf Sprint and then came back to win this race in 2021, so hopefully that history repeats.
- Cy Fair
- Joe Shiesty
- Commanche Brave
- Shisospicy
