2026 Filly & Mare Sprint Handicapping: Ways and Means Race Odds: 7-5
Something of a seven-furlongs specialist, Ways and Means has won four times in eight tries at the distance with two seconds and a third. She had a bit of traffic trouble in this race last year, finishing fifth but only beaten by 1 1/2 lengths.
She comes in on a two-race win streak including a last-out win in the (G1) Ballerina Stakes at Saratoga where she hit the wire in front by five lengths at this distance.
2026 Filly & Mare Sprint Handicapping: Explora Race Odds: 4-1
Another who seems to relish the distance, Explora has made five starts at 7 furlongs and won three and finished second in the other two.
Last out she ran second beaten just a head in (G3) Dogwood Stakes at Churchill Downs. Prior to that she was an easy five-length winner of the (G1) Test Stakes, finishing ahead of the very good Percy’s Bar. She’s a front-runner who will have to contend with other early speed and she’s a three-year-old stepping up to face older horses for the first time.
2026 Filly & Mare Sprint Handicapping: R Disaster Race Odds: 8-1
R Disaster is one of those other horses with lots of early speed, and three starts ago that carried her to a 2 1/4 length win over Ways and Means in the (G1) Derby City Distaff. That was a seven furlong race, but there’s a sense that she’s better suited to 6 1/2.
She was a last out wire-to-wire winner of the (G2) Gallant Bloom Stakes, run at 6 1/2 furlongs at Belmont Park. If she can control the pace she should be part of it in the end, but she has to avoid getting hooked into an early speed duel.
2026 Filly & Mare Sprint Handicapping: Evanescence Race Odds: 15-1
The horse for the course, Evanescence has three wins from three starts at Keeneland, and two wins from nine starts elsewhere. Most recently she got up to win the (G2) Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes by a neck, going 6 1/2 furlongs on this track.
She’s been beaten by several others in here in the past so she has to be better. But on her favourite track she’ll be closing late from off the pace, and if the speed falters she could be there to get a pice of it.

Historically this has been a race where you settle for a low-price favourite or swing for the fences with a high-priced bomb.
The trouble is I just can’t find a high-priced bomb that looks ready to close the gap on Ways and Means, unless she absolutely hates the Keeneland surface. Not counting on that, I’ll pick her for the win, while not betting her for the win.
I don’t think R Disaster is going to get the same pace setup as she did when she beat the favourite at Churchill. In fact, I think the pace could get pretty hot, so I’ll use Evanescence underneath and hope to make my money in the exacta.
