2026 Juvenile Turf Handicapping
- Irish trainer Aiden O’Brien has dominated the race, winning the last four in a row, five of the last 10, and eight of 19 overall
- Favourites have won the last three, four of the last 10 and finished in the money three other times. Winning odds have been 7-1 or less in nine of the past 10 races
- Six of the past 10 winners had won their previous race, three others had finished second
- All three US-based winners in the past 10 years had won the Pilgrim Stakes in their final prep
2026 Juvenile Turf Handicapping: How’s Al Today Race Odds: 3-1
How’s Al Today started his career four races back with a win on the dirt, and he’s only upped his game in his last two on the turf, winning by 4 and then 4 1/2 lengths, both races coming at Kentucky Downs.
Last out at this one-mile distance he scored his first stakes victory, and he finished ahead of two rivals that both came back to win their next start. The caveat is that Kentucky Downs is a unique course in US racing and success there doesn’t always carry over to other tracks. He’s also facing a big step up in competition.
2026 Juvenile Turf Handicapping: Folsom Blues Race Odds: 7-2
The late running Folsom Blues has never been out of the money in six lifetime starts, the first five of those in his native Ireland and the last in France.
He was second in that last effort behind Amusingly, who is one of the favourites for the Juvenile Fillies Turf. Two back he was an easy Group 1 winner at the Curragh going seven furlongs on a yielding course. The question for him is the surface as he has never raced on the type of firm ground he’ll have at Keeneland.
2026 Juvenile Turf Handicapping: Great Barrier Reef Race Odds: 4-1
The always-dangerous combination of trainer O’Brien and jockey Moore is enough to make Great Barrier Reef a contender here, although he doesn’t have quite the resume on paper as some others in the field.
After winning his first three lifetime starts, he’s been second and third in his last two, the most recent of those in the (G1) Darley Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket. What may work to his favour is that his best effort came on a firm turf course, when he won the (G2) Coventry Stakes at Ascot.
2026 Juvenile Turf Handicapping: Haffner Race Odds: 8-1
Also trained by Aiden O’Brien, Haffner is a Kentucky-bred colt by Triple Crown winner Justify, who has done all his racing in the UK and Ireland, picking up three wins and two second-place finishes in six lifetime starts.
Last out he won the one-mile (G2) Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket over a course rated as good-fast. Two back he was well-beaten by Folsom Blues on the yielding Curragh surface, the only time he’s failed to hit the exacta.
Here’s My 2026 Juvenile Turf Free Pick
The flat mile on the turf is my favourite kind of race, and I’m looking forward to this one as it might provide the best value on the Friday Breeders’ Cup race card.
There’s no clear-cut favourite here, and all the top contenders come with question marks. It’s a tough one to handicap, but I’m going to look for a bit of price and land on the under-the-radar Haffner for the win. Because of the soft turf at the Curragh I’m going to toss his seventh-place effort there and lean on the fact he came back so well when he got the firm footing in the Royal Lodge.
I’m a bit concerned that jockey Moore has been aboard for all three of his wins and here chooses to ride Great Barrier Reef. But I’ll deal with that problem by using that one in my exacta box.
- Haffner
- Great Barrier Reef
- Folsom Blues
- How’s Al Today
