Regarding all things 2023 NFL Draft, it’s interesting to note that Notre Dame, USC, and Oklahoma are tied for the most first overall picks coming from their respective schools with five each. Additionally, when it comes to the positional breakdown of the 86 total first overall picks, 34x have been QB’s, 23x RB’s, 16x D-Line, 7x O-Line, 3x WR’s, 3x LB’s, and 1x DB.
Moreover, it’s worth mentioning that the first overall pick has been a quarterback in four of the last five drafts, and six of the last eight. However, it’s been a while since a running back has been selected first overall since Ki-Jana Carter in 1995.
Furthermore, it’s interesting to point out that three of the last five first overall picks won the Heisman Trophy in their final college season – Trevor Lawrence and Travon Walker, the most recent first overall picks, did not.
Some facts about the NFL Draft
Firstly, the order in which teams pick in the draft is determined by their performance in the previous season. The team with the worst record gets the first pick, and the team with the best record gets the last pick in the first round.
The order then rotates for subsequent rounds.
Secondly, the first NFL Draft was held in 1936, and the format has evolved over time. In the early years, the draft was held in a single day and could last as long as 30 rounds. Today, the draft takes place over three days and includes a variety of pre-draft events and coverage.
Thirdly, while the first few picks in the draft are highly sought after, there is no guarantee that a high draft pick will translate into success on the field.
Many players selected early in the draft have gone on to have successful careers, but there are also many examples of late-round picks who have become superstars in the NFL.
The process for determining the NFL Draft order is based on the final standings of the regular season. The team that finishes with the poorest record will have the first pick in the NFL Draft, and the subsequent selections will follow in order up to the 20th pick. The 12 remaining teams that made it to the playoffs will be ranked based on the order of their elimination during the postseason.

NFL Draft – Late Breaking News Is Always Fun To Watch
These are just a few examples of the breaking news stories that have taken place on NFL draft day over the years. The draft is always full of surprises, and fans never know what to expect when their team is on the clock.
Here are a few notable examples:
1998 Colts
In 1998, the Indianapolis Colts had the first overall pick in the draft and were expected to select University of Tennessee quarterback Peyton Manning. However, just hours before the draft, rumors began to circulate that the Colts were considering drafting Washington State quarterback Ryan Leaf instead. In the end, the Colts did indeed select Manning, and Leaf went second overall to the San Diego Chargers. Manning went on to have a Hall of Fame career, while Leaf struggled in the NFL.
2004 Giants
In 2004, the New York Giants had the fourth overall pick in the draft and were expected to select University of Mississippi quarterback Eli Manning. However, just minutes before the pick, it was announced that the Chargers had traded Manning’s rights to the Giants in exchange for quarterback Philip Rivers and several other draft picks. Manning went on to lead the Giants to two Super Bowl victories, while Rivers had a successful career with the Chargers.
2016 Dolphins
In 2016, just hours before the draft, a video of University of Mississippi offensive lineman Laremy Tunsil smoking marijuana through a gas mask was posted on his Twitter account. The video caused Tunsil’s draft stock to plummet, and he fell from being a potential top-five pick to being selected 13th overall by the Miami Dolphins.
2020 Packers
In 2020, during the first round of the draft, the Green Bay Packers traded up to select Utah State quarterback Jordan Love with the 26th overall pick. The move surprised many analysts and fans, as the Packers already had future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers on their roster. The move sparked speculation that the Packers were preparing to move on from Rodgers, which eventually led to a high-profile dispute between the team and their star quarterback.
NFL Draft Pick – Contracts
The amount of money that top NFL draft picks receive can vary depending on several factors such as the draft position, the player’s position, and the specific year’s salary cap. Generally speaking, the earlier a player is drafted, the higher their salary will be.
In the 2021 NFL draft, the top pick, Trevor Lawrence, signed a four-year contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars worth $36.8 million, including a $24.1 million signing bonus. The second pick, Zach Wilson, signed a four-year contract with the New York Jets worth $35.15 million, including a $22.9 million signing bonus.
All Things NFL Draft: Joe Burrow
For comparison, in the 2020 NFL draft, the top pick, Joe Burrow, signed a four-year contract with the Cincinnati Bengals worth $36.1 million, including a $23.9 million signing bonus. The second pick, Chase Young, signed a four-year contract with the Washington Football Team worth $34.6 million, including a $22.7 million signing bonus.
It’s worth noting that these contracts are not fully guaranteed, meaning that the team can cut the player and avoid paying the remainder of their contract. However, signing bonuses are typically fully guaranteed, and the player will receive that money even if they are released by the team.
