Reports of the 49ers’ demise have been greatly exaggerated. San Francisco enters this season with by far the easiest schedule in the league, and that could be the springboard to return this team to the elite tier.
The offense will still be under Kyle Shanahan’s control, and while there was some turnover at the wide receiver position, there’s a bevy of good pass-catchers on the roster, particularly when Brandon Aiyuk gets healthy and if they expand George Kittle’s role as a pass-catcher.
With that said, the offense will once again run through now-healthy Christian McCaffrey, who’s proven he can bring this team – and Brock Purdy – to a whole new level when he’s at his best.
On the other side of the ball, Robert Saleh returns to coach a defense that’s much younger than the unit fielded a year ago. Many key veterans left during free agency, and the 49ers used their first five picks in the draft on defensive players to plug holes in that unit.
If they can stay healthy – particularly McCaffrey and 37-year-old left tackle Trent Williams – the 49ers look like the single best value pick in divisional betting odds.

The Rams started 2024 with a 1-4 record before ascending to the top of the NFC West and giving the Eagles their biggest scare on Philadelphia’s Super Bowl run. They started 2023 with a 3-6 record, so that’s just the way they like to do it.
Sean McVay’s offense now has Davante Adams playing alongside emerging star Puka Nacua, giving Matthew Stafford one of the best wide receiver pairs to get the ball too in an offense that shouldn’t have much issue moving the ball.
The defense was much improved last season and really came on toward the end of the year, but this is an undersized unit that the Eagles really showed can be pushed around.
The problems for this team will come in the form of a tough division winners’ schedule.
Arizona Cardinals NFC West Futures Odds – 2025/26
Kyler Murray was bothered by a knee injury for much of 2024, but he intends to run more this year, and if he can pair that with the strides he took as a passer (career high in QBR and passing success rate) he’ll once again be viewed as one of the better quarterbacks in the league.
Something that can help take Murray to the next level is if 2024 first round pick Marvin Harrison Jr. can elevate his game after a disappointing rookie campaign where he did show flashes. Offensive coordinator Drew Petzing will need to work harder to put Harrison in successful positions.
With that said, this will be the most talented team the Cardinals have fielded under Jonathan Gannon. In what should be a vastly improved NFC West thanks to a soft schedule, the Cardinals could be a team that flirts with double-digit wins.
Seattle Seahawks NFC West Futures Odds – 2025/26
Another improved team with a favorable schedule this year is the Seahawks, who will have a very different look on offense this year. Gone are quarterback Geno Smith, and top pass-catchers D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett. Replacing them are 2024 revelation Sam Darnold, and NFC West mainstay Cooper Kupp.
Klint Kubiak also joins the team as the new offensive coordinator after excelling in New Orleans last year.
The run game will be a focus with Kenneth Walker and Zach Charbonnet, but the key will be how well this offensive line holds up, both for the run game, and to keep Darnold from seeing ghosts. Offensive line coach John Benton may be the most important person in the building.
The team will be led by its defense which is architected by Mike Macdonald. Their schedule is very favorable so we should see the Seahawks in postseason contention come winter.
Having said that, Seattle has an out in Darnold’s contract after one year and third round rookie Jalen Milroe is lurking, so this season could go off the rails if everything doesn’t fall into place.
