The 2021 season kicks off in Detroit for both the 49ers and Lions on Sunday. It is a brand new start for Detroit in the post-Matthew Stafford era and the 49ers are looking to pretend the 2020 season never happened.
San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers are still Jimmy Garoppolo’s team, for now. They selected Trey Lance with the 3rd pick this year after trading up but Garoppolo remains in the QB1 position. Lance has been limited at practice this week, dealing with an injury to his index finger. Be it Garoppolo or Lance, the 49er quarterbacks will have additional protection this season. They signed 6x Pro-Bowl center Alex Mack in the off-season.
It’s not clear what to expect from the 49ers this year. 2 seasons ago they won 13 games and played in the Super Bowl. Then last year they could only manage 6 wins. Their fans have referred to it as “the season from hell. They have reason to be more upbeat about this year, however.
In addition to the signing of Mack, they also drafted two running backs in Trey Sermon and Elijah Mitchel, hoping to bring their run game back to 2019 levels, where they were second in all of football. They are also expecting Lance to run the football when he gets his reps this year.
SF struggled mightily with injuries last year and went most of the season without Nick Bosa, Richard Sherman, and Dee Ford. The 49ers went 2-7 in their last 9 games last year, knocking them firmly out of the playoff race. Considering the injuries they were dealing with, the 6-10 record makes them look worse on paper than they really are, however.
The last 6 of 7 seasons have been subpar for the team. Aside from 2019’s 13-win season, they haven’t been above .500 since 2013. It seems likely that they should bounce back this season, however.
Detroit Lions
It’s been almost 30 years since the Detroit Lions won a playoff game. They’ve made the playoffs 9 times in the 29 seasons that have passed since they defeated the Cowboys that year to advance to the NFC Championship game, which they lost to Washington. In the last 3 seasons, however, the Lions have only managed 14 wins.
New head coach Dan Campbell and first-year General Manager Brad Holmes have been tasked with attempting to turn things around this season. Longtime quarterback Matthew Stafford is gone, replaced by Jared Goff, who will be looking for a fresh start since leaving the Los Angeles Rams.
Last season’s 5-11 record can largely be attributed to poor defense, something the Lions will need to fix to be competitive this year. To that end, fans are hoping for a better sophomore year from 2020 1st round draft pick Jeff Okudah at cornerback. Injuries hampered his performance last year, limiting him to just 9 games.
It’s basically a new team with many developing players this year. 24 of the 53-man roster are new faces.
NFL Betting Trends:

- 49ers have won 10 of their last 11 SU against Detroit.
- Lions have dropped 10 of their last 11 home games SU.
- 49ers are 12-5 SU in their last 17 away games.
- Lions are 1-4 SU in their last 5 against NFC teams.
4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: San Francisco 49ers -8
NFL Betting Prediction: There is no reason to believe the 49ers shouldn’t cover the -8 spread here. The Lions aren’t going to be much this season, and they will likely be worse to start the year than they will be as it progresses. There are too many new faces to be confident in them early in the season.
On the other hand, the 49ers could return to form this season and that might start with a route of Detroit in Week 1.
