Minnesota is coming off the biggest comeback victory in the history of the NFL to host the Giants, who secured a crucial victory of their own on SNF.
Last weekend the NFL featured multiple games with wild swings, last second scores and huge reverse spikes in WP charts. These two teams both played heart-stopping matches, but Minnesota’s obviously takes the cake.
So how do they respond? In college football we would call it a letdown spot but we typically don’t in the NFL because these are professionals and not kids. But are we sure that it isn’t the case?
For added drama, the Giants and Vikings have met many times before with the Giants notably shocking the Vikes in the NFC title game in 2000, winning 41-0. Are we in for another surprise?
Minnesota Vikings
Minnesota’s comeback began when they essentially abandoned the run. It’s not that simple — there are a multitude of factors that go into a game like that — but you can’t win without scoring. Jefferson and Osborn were the featured targets, but even Dalvin Cook managed to take a 64 yard screen to the house.
And that was against an Indy defense that rates well against the pass and knew Minnesota had to throw. If ever there was a case for momentum being real, this game was living proof.
It’s expected that this game will follow a more normal game script though. That means much more balanced play calling but Minnesota has the weapons to dominate here. They’ll likely stress not getting off to a slow start again, but I think right now the Vikings are at peak cost.
The Vikings are just 27th against the pass by DVOA and while the Giants aren’t an explosive offense, they rate well through the DVOA lens. This is a team that surrendered 171 rushing yards to a Colts team without Jonathan Taylor. What will Barkley do?
New York Giants
New York required some questionable officiating to defeat Washington but a win is a win as they say. It was the same old story for Big Blue: let Barkley go to work and ask Jones to do just enough to keep the chains moving on 3rd and long.
Much like Philly, Minnesota has an explosive offense that can put the Giants underwater quickly though. That’s exactly where they DON’T want to be because the offense lacks explosiveness and a 14-0 hole early is a death knell.
Speaking of Barkley, he faced down a very good Washington rush defense and produced 87 yards and a score on the ground and looked very shifty in space. DVOA says the Giants are a top-10 rushing unit and Minnesota is assuredly game planning for just as much.
The lack of corner depth on the Giants is concerning in this matchup. Washington has 3 quality options, so it’s not as though Minnesota represents a steep incline in difficulty but they have veteran receivers that very much know what they’re doing. Cousins is a big upgrade over Hienicke, so the defense will be tested.
The Giants showed a pass rush on SNF that looked their best since the heyday of a decade ago. Thibodeaux’s strip sack for 6 was the key score and Ojulari’s return has introduced synergy in the pass rush. Cousin’s has famously struggled under pressure so there is a path to covering here.

In a perfect world, we live bet this game. Because New York is so disadvantaged from an early negative game script, it would be nice to know how the first few possessions shake out.
But we don’t live in a perfect world, friend. Sharps are quick to point out that Minnesota has been a paper tiger all season. They’re 11-3 with a scoring differential of +2.
So we know that at some point, Minnesota’s true colors will show and they’ll come back to Earth.
The Giants are 4-1 ATS as road underdogs, covering by an average of 3.7 points. Add that to a hangover spot for Minnesota? I’m taking the points.
