Defensively, the Chiefs allow 19.2 points and 317.8 yards per game. Their ability to limit opponents’ scoring opportunities has complemented the offense’s strong start.
Kansas City has recorded seven takeaways through four games. Steve Spagnuolo continues to use pressure and coverage adjustments to create mistakes.

Herbert has the arm strength to challenge Kansas City’s secondary.
Mahomes faces a Chargers defense that has limited opposing passing production. He must remain patient when Los Angeles protects against explosive plays.
Herbert will have to recognize Spagnuolo’s pressure looks before the snap. Kansas City has several ways to disrupt protection and force hurried decisions. The Chargers need more manageable third downs to avoid putting their QB in predictable passing situations.
Both quarterbacks can produce explosive plays. Mahomes has enjoyed greater stability around him, while Herbert has faced a difficult combination of injuries and inconsistent execution.
Los Angeles Chargers vs. Kansas City Chiefs bottom line: Kansas City brings the stronger offensive balance and defensive consistency, while Los Angeles must improve substantially to challenge the unbeaten Chiefs.
Los Angeles Chargers vs. Kansas City Chiefs Football Betting Trends

- Also, the Chargers have a 42.9% success rate against the spread as underdogs in their last 7 regular season games.
- The Chiefs have won all 4 of their games as favorites in the current regular season.
- Additionally, Kansas City has a 75% success rate on the over in games following a win over the last 4 regular season games.

Chargers Chiefs Free Pick: Chiefs -8.5
Here is my Chargers Chiefs free pick: I’m taking Kansas City Chiefs -8.5. The Chiefs have had an extra week to prepare, and the Chargers arrive with serious personnel problems. That’s a difficult combination for Los Angeles at Arrowhead.
The biggest issue is whether the Chargers can sustain drives against Steve Spagnuolo’s defense. An offense struggling with protection cannot afford repeated third-and-long situations.
I’m not ignoring the size of this spread.
Kansas City needs to create separation, and Los Angeles’ offensive limitations give the Chiefs that opportunity.
The Chargers swept this rivalry last season, so Reid has plenty of motivation to make adjustments. Kansas City also has the personnel to dictate the tempo rather than allowing another close divisional finish.
The concern is Kansas City settling for FG’s and allowing Los Angeles to hang around. That would make laying more than a touchdown uncomfortable. The Chiefs need touchdowns when they reach scoring territory.
Herbert can keep the Chargers competitive if he gets clean protection.
But Los Angeles has struggled to finish games, and the Chiefs have the defensive personnel to make those problems worse. Kansas City should also benefit from starting drives in favorable field position if its defense consistently wins early downs.
I’m laying Chiefs -8.5 because I expect Kansas City to build a lead rather than spend another afternoon protecting a narrow one. The Chargers need a major turnaround in offensive execution to prevent that. I’m not paying for a turnaround they haven’t shown.
