The second preseason game of 2021 for both the Indianapolis Colts and Minnesota Vikings will take place on Saturday.
In 2019, Indianapolis was 0-4 and Minnesota was 3-1 in the preseason. The Colts finished that season 7-9 and the Vikings finished 10-6. In 2020, Indianapolis turned it around, going 11-5 while Minnesota went the other way with a disappointing 7-9 season.
Indianapolis Colts
The Colts won their last game 21-18 over the Panthers. QB Jacob Eason had an impressive performance going 15 of 21 for 183 yards. If Wentz is out to start the season, Eason will have to be their guy until he gets back.
QB Sam Ehlinger played the second half after Eason and did not play bad at all. He secured the win with a 2 minute drill drive down the field for a field goal while the game was tied. It will be interesting to see which QB ends up looking better this game.
According to Football Insiders’ DVOA (Defense-adjusted Value Over Average), the team ranked 10th in the league in 2020. This is a measurement of successful plays considering both total yards and yards towards a first down, with extra “points” awarded for big plays. There is an offensive and defensive component to the stat. The Colts were 12th in offense and 7th in defense.
All eyes will be on this Colts offense that will most likely need to get by without Wentz come week 1. With the history of Wentz (injuries and high-variance play), some might be looking to see if the team will be able to survive with Eason or Ehlinger if required.
Minnesota Vikings
The Vikings were blown out 33-6 by the Broncos in their last preseason game, but we shouldn’t take too much away from that loss since almost no starters played for Minnesota compared to the Broncos.
They will have to start playing starters to get them some reps, so we will likely see them take the field for the first time on Saturday. We will also get to see their new defensive line that is expected to be much improved from last season.
In 2020, Minnesota ranked 20th overall in DVOA (8th in offensive, 18th in defensive). QB Kirk Cousins has some good weapons to help the offense this year in WRs Jefferson and Thielen, and RB Dalvin Cook.
This Minnesota team looks to be pretty good this year, but this week will be a feeling-out process with the starters playing together for the first time.

4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: Indianapolis Colts +2.5
The Colts are the bet in this matchup. The basis of this bet relies on the strong correlation between prior season playoff teams and preseason performance. We fit that strategy here against a non-playoff team and this trend historically becomes even stronger when taking the underdog. In addition, home underdogs in general do well in preseason games.
