Broncos vs. Chiefs Gameday
The Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs open their 2026 regular seasons with an AFC West matchup in the Monday Night Football premiere. The Broncos visit GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium on Monday, September 14, with kickoff set for 8:15 PM ET. Fans can tune in on ESPN and ABC for the primetime matchup.
Denver enters 2026 as the defending AFC West champion after finishing last season 14-3.
The Broncos are led by head coach Sean Payton, with Davis Webb taking over as offensive coordinator and Vance Joseph continuing to run the defense. Denver is looking to build on a season that included two victories over Kansas City. The Broncos also finished the preseason with an impressive 34-6 victory over Minnesota.
Kansas City, coached by Andy Reid, is trying to rebound from a disappointing 6-11 season. Eric Bieniemy has returned as offensive coordinator, while Steve Spagnuolo remains in charge of the defense.
The Chiefs went winless in the preseason, losing to the Rams and Buccaneers before tying Seattle 9-9 in their finale.
Both teams compete in the AFC West, giving the opener some immediate divisional importance. Denver swept Kansas City last season and ended the Chiefs’ nine-year run as division champions.
That recent head-to-head success adds another layer to the Monday night matchup.

Denver Broncos vs. Kansas City Chiefs Odds & Last 5
The Chiefs are favored at -146 on the moneyline, while the Broncos are +122. Kansas City is also laying 2.5 points at home. With the total set at 43.5, the market is expecting a relatively competitive and lower-scoring divisional matchup.
Denver has recently found success against Kansas City.
The Broncos won both regular-season meetings last year, including a 20-13 Christmas night victory at Arrowhead Stadium. Denver controlled possession for more than 39 minutes and held Kansas City to only 139 total yards. That victory improved the Broncos to 13-3 at the time.
Kansas City finished the 2025 season 6-11 and missed the playoffs after a decade-long postseason streak.
The Chiefs also went without a preseason victory this summer. They lost 20-12 to the Rams and 16-15 to Tampa Bay before finishing with a 9-9 tie against Seattle. Now the games start counting with a division rival coming to town.
Chiefs Stats
Kansas City enters the 2026 regular season looking for more production offensively. The Chiefs averaged 21.3 points per game last season while finishing with 362 points. Their offense now gets Patrick Mahomes back after his 2025 season was cut short after 14 appearances.
The defense was much better, allowing only 19.3 points per game.
Kansas City finished sixth in scoring defense despite the team’s losing record. Steve Spagnuolo remains the defensive coordinator, giving the Chiefs continuity on that side of the ball. That unit will be important against a Denver team that won 14 games last season.
The Chiefs had a quiet preseason on the scoreboard, losing to the Rams and Buccaneers before tying Seattle. The results matter less than getting the roster prepared, but Kansas City never scored more than 15 points in any of those three games.
Mahomes is the biggest storyline entering Week 1 after his 2025 season ended with a serious left knee injury.
He was cleared for full participation before training camp and has worked his way back for the opener. Kansas City also brought Eric Bieniemy back as offensive coordinator after he spent the 2025 season coaching running backs in Chicago.

Broncos Stats
Denver enters 2026 after finishing 14-3 and winning the AFC West. The Broncos produced 5,825 offensive yards last season, ranking 10th in the NFL. Bo Nix directed an offense that helped Denver turn its strong defensive work into a 14-win season.
The defense was the bigger strength, allowing only 18.3 points per game.
Denver finished second in total defense after surrendering 4,730 yards, or 278.2 per game. The Broncos were particularly disruptive up front, leading the NFL with 68 sacks. That pass rush remains one of the biggest challenges Kansas City must handle in the opener.
The Broncos finished the preseason 2-1. They closed it with a 34-6 victory over Minnesota after losing 33-13 to Green Bay one week earlier. Denver rested its starters against the Vikings, giving younger players the opportunity to finish the preseason.
There has been some turnover on the defense entering 2026, and edge rusher Jonathon Cooper will not be available for Week 1.
Cooper was placed on the commissioner’s exempt list and cannot practice or play while on it. Even without him, Denver still brings back considerable talent throughout a defense that should remain one of the strengths of this roster.

Broncos vs. Chiefs QB Matchup
Patrick Mahomes remains the starting quarterback for Kansas City and enters 2026 after an unusual season. He played in 14 games last year, completing 315 of 502 passes for 3,587 yards. Mahomes finished with 22 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions before a knee injury ended his season.
Mahomes has since made significant progress in his recovery.
The Chiefs cleared him for full participation ahead of training camp, putting him on track for the regular-season opener. His return changes the look of a Kansas City offense that had to finish last season without him. Denver will provide an immediate test for his protection.
Bo Nix returns as Denver’s starter after another productive season. He started all 17 regular-season games and completed 388 of 612 passes for 3,931 yards. Nix threw 25 touchdowns against 11 interceptions while also rushing for 356 yards and five scores.
Nix helped the Broncos sweep Kansas City last season.
In the Christmas night meeting at Arrowhead, he completed 26 of 38 passes for 182 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Nix also rushed for a score as Denver controlled the football and earned a 20-13 victory.
Denver Broncos vs. Kansas City Chiefs bottom line: Denver brings the stronger recent defensive form into Arrowhead, while Kansas City looks to reset at home with Patrick Mahomes back under center.
Denver Broncos vs. Kansas City Chiefs Football Betting Trends

- The Chiefs have struggled as favorites, with a 4-9 record against the spread in their last 13 regular-season games.
- Additionally, Kansas City has a 5-8 straight-up record as favorites in their last 13 regular-season matchups.

Broncos Chiefs Free Pick: Under 43.5
Here is my Broncos Chiefs free pick:
This total has me looking Under in a matchup built around two defenses that were among the NFL’s best last season. Denver allowed 18.3 points per game, while Kansas City surrendered 19.3, giving both sides a reliable foundation entering Week 1.
The Broncos were especially nasty defensively, finishing second in total defense and leading the league with 68 sacks. They also held Kansas City to 13 points at Arrowhead on Christmas, although Patrick Mahomes did not play in that meeting.
Kansas City’s offense is the bigger question for me. Mahomes is back after his knee injury ended the 2025 season, but the Chiefs averaged only 21.3 points last year and now open against a defense capable of wrecking drives with pressure. Denver doesn’t need to turn this into a track meet, either.
Mahomes makes the Chiefs dangerous, but 43.5 still gives these defenses some room to work.
The previous meeting finished with only 33 combined points, and Denver controlled possession for more than 39 minutes. Kansas City also managed only 139 total yards that night, showing how effectively Denver can dictate this matchup defensively.
In a divisional opener where possessions should matter, I’ll trust both defenses and play the Under 43.5.
