Both teams come into Week 3 at 0-2 – not all that surprising. The Giants could easily be 1-1 right now if not for blowing a late lead against Washington. The Falcons were blown out by the Eagles in Week 1 but then hung around with Tampa Bay until late in the game last week.
Football Outsiders has the Falcons ranked dead last in the league, and the Giants at 22nd through two weeks.
Atlanta Falcons
Although Atlanta is 0-2 against the spread, they showed stretches of competency and competitiveness. Two pick 6s in the 4th quarter ruined their chances last game after they were within a field goal early in the 4th.
Their offense has been terrible through two weeks, although it was better against the Bucs than the Eagles. Tampa hasn’t been great in the secondary, so it wasn’t too surprising.
The only thing going for this team right now is their run defense is pretty good, but that won’t win them games. Matt Ryan wasn’t very good in either game, so he’ll need to be better in this winnable game for them.
The Falcons do have some trends on their side. Bad teams after a blowout cover at a high rate early in the season, and so do conference underdogs. The public already labeled this team as terrible so we should get some line value with the road visitor after two blowout losses.
New York Giants
NY is 1-1 against the spread after dropping their last game by a point but covering the spread. Despite being in the lead right before the final seconds of the game, the Giants were the 2nd best team on the field.
Their defense was much worse than the Washington defense, and their offense was worse as well. The Giants’ biggest edge was in special teams. Their passing offense was much better against the Broncos in week 1 despite the big loss.
There was one very significant dropped pass by a wide open Golladay that surely would have been a TD which didn’t help matters. I personally believe Jones overthrew him which was unnecessary given how wide open he was.
Keep in mind last game was against Taylor Heinicke at QB. Although he’s a good backup, it makes NY’s near win not look as good. Washington’s defense also needs to be closer to what they were last year to be a tough team to beat.
