Both teams have plenty to prove early, although they enter the new season from very different starting points.
Arizona begins a new era with Mike LaFleur taking over as Head Coach after the Cardinals finished 3-14 last season. Los Angeles remains under Head Coach Jim Harbaugh after finishing 11-6 and earning an AFC Wild Card berth last season. Mike McDaniel takes over as Offensive Coordinator, with Chris O’Leary running the defense. Arizona Cardinals vs. Los Angeles Chargers Odds & Last 5
The betting market heavily favors Los Angeles entering this Week 1 matchup at SoFi Stadium. The Chargers are listed at -586 on the moneyline, while Arizona comes back at +432. Los Angeles is also laying -10.5 points, giving the Cardinals one of the larger underdog numbers on the opening slate.
Arizona went 1-2 during the preseason, opening with a 27-14 victory against Las Vegas before dropping its final two games. The Cardinals finished the exhibition schedule with a wild 42-38 loss against Green Bay, showing plenty of offense while having trouble keeping the Packers off the scoreboard.
Los Angeles also finished the preseason at 1-2.
The Chargers opened with a convincing 27-7 victory at Houston before falling 41-17 against San Francisco. Los Angeles then dropped its finale 20-18 against the Rams, ending the preseason with consecutive defeats. Those results leave Harbaugh’s team with plenty to clean up before turning the page to Week 1.
Chargers Stats
The Los Angeles Chargers are looking to build on an 11-6 regular season that earned them another trip to the AFC playoffs. Los Angeles generated 5,675 total offensive yards, an average of 333.8 per game. The Chargers also rushed for 2,067 yards while scoring 368 points across their 17-game schedule.
Justin Herbert remained the engine of the offense with 3,727 passing yards and 26 touchdowns last season. Kimani Vidal led the ground game with 643 yards, while Omarion Hampton contributed another 545 rushing yards. Ladd McConkey paced the receiving corps with 789 yards despite missing time during the season.
The Chargers were even stronger defensively, allowing only 340 points and 4,849 total offensive yards. Opposing quarterbacks threw only 16 touchdown passes against Los Angeles, while the secondary intercepted 19 passes. The defense also generated 45 sacks, giving the Chargers production at every level.
Tuli Tuipulotu led that pass rush with 13 sacks, while Odafe Oweh added another 7.5. Daiyan Henley remained active in the middle of the defense and finished as one of the team’s leading tacklers.
That defensive production gives Los Angeles a clear foundation heading into another season.
The Chargers now get to open at SoFi Stadium against an Arizona offense adjusting to a new coaching staff. With Herbert back under center and McDaniel taking over the offense, Los Angeles has plenty of established pieces surrounding its quarterback.
Another playoff appearance will be the expectation rather than the ceiling for this group.

Cardinals Stats
The Arizona Cardinals enter the 2026 regular season needing a significant improvement after finishing 3-14 last year. Arizona averaged 20.9 points per game while generating 5,419 total offensive yards. The passing game accounted for 3,955 yards, but the Cardinals struggled to establish enough consistency over a difficult season.
Jacoby Brissett eventually took over at quarterback and produced career-best numbers across his 12 starts. He completed 315-of-485 passes for 3,366 yards and 23 touchdowns against only eight interceptions. Brissett also finished with a career-best 94.1 passer rating while providing some stability after Arizona’s quarterback situation changed.
The Cardinals had considerably more trouble on the defensive side, allowing opponents to score 28.7 points per game. Arizona surrendered 6,081 total yards and struggled to consistently get off the field throughout the season. Injuries only made things more difficult for a defense that spent too much time playing from behind.
Arizona’s running game also enters the season with questions after injuries heavily impacted the position last year. James Conner opens the 2026 season on injured reserve, removing a proven veteran from LaFleur’s offense.
That puts more pressure on Brissett and Arizona’s remaining skill players to carry the offense.
The Cardinals now have a different coaching staff attempting to get more from a roster that won only three games last season. LaFleur and Hackett inherit an offense that showed some passing ability but needs considerably more balance.
Arizona will find out quickly how much progress has been made against one of last season’s better defenses.

Cardinals vs. Chargers QB Matchup
Justin Herbert enters his seventh NFL season after completing 340-of-512 passes for 3,727 yards in 2025. He threw 26 touchdowns against 13 interceptions and finished with a 94.1 passer rating. Herbert also added 498 rushing yards and two touchdowns, giving Los Angeles additional production when plays broke down.
His mobility became especially valuable behind an offense that allowed him to absorb 54 sacks last season.
Herbert still managed to start all 17 games and lead Los Angeles back into the postseason. He now begins his first season working with McDaniel, bringing another offensive voice into a unit that already has an established franchise quarterback.
Jacoby Brissett returns for Arizona after putting together the most productive passing season of his career. Brissett completed 64.9% of his attempts for 3,366 yards, 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He started 12 games after taking over when Kyler Murray was injured and gave Arizona consistent quarterback play down the stretch.
Brissett now enters his second season in Arizona but his first operating LaFleur and Hackett’s offense. His eight interceptions on 485 attempts were a positive in a season where the Cardinals frequently found themselves playing from behind.
Herbert owns the longer track record as a franchise starter, while Brissett’s 2025 production gives Arizona some stability at the position.
This matchup puts two veteran quarterbacks against defenses that finished 2025 at opposite ends of the spectrum. Herbert gets the advantage of opening at SoFi Stadium, while Brissett faces a Chargers defense that allowed only 340 points and intercepted 19 passes last season.
Arizona Cardinals vs. Los Angeles Chargers bottom line: Los Angeles brings an 11-win roster and one of last season’s better defenses into Week 1, while Arizona begins a new coaching era looking for a major turnaround.
Arizona Cardinals vs. Los Angeles Chargers Football Betting Trends
- The Cardinals have struggled against the spread as underdogs, going 5-9 in their last 14 regular season games.
- Arizona’s games have gone over the total in 8 of their last 12 regular season games when they were underdogs.
- Also, the Cardinals have a poor straight-up record on the road, winning just 1 of their last 6 regular season games.
- The Chargers have been strong straight-up at home, winning 4 of their last 5 regular season games.
- Additionally, Los Angeles has covered the spread in 4 of their last 5 regular season home games.
- The Chargers have a straight-up record of 4-2 as favorites in their last 6 regular season games.
Cardinals Chargers Free Pick: Chargers -10
Here is my Cardinals Chargers free pick: Los Angeles -10.5 is a hefty number for Week 1, but I’m willing to lay it against an Arizona team coming off a miserable season. The Cardinals finished 3-14 and lost their final 9 games.
The Chargers were heading in the opposite direction, finishing 11-6 while going 6-3 at SoFi Stadium. They also covered 6 of their 9 home games, giving us some history of Los Angeles handling expectations in this building.
Arizona’s biggest problem was stopping people. The Cardinals allowed 28.7 points per game last season and surrendered at least 26 points in 8 of their final 9 games. That’s trouble.
I’m comfortable laying double digits because the gap between these teams was substantial last season, especially on the defensive side of the football.
Herbert gives LA the quarterback advantage, and the Chargers averaged 26.8 points during their final 8 regular-season games. Arizona also went just 2-7 away from home.
More importantly, the Cardinals were outscored by 129 points last season. This wasn’t a team consistently losing close games; 7 of Arizona’s defeats came by double digits.
The number is big. So is the talent gap.
I’ll lay the points with the Chargers -10.5.
