This is one of those preseason games where it is difficult to find a reason to watch. Maybe that is why they put it in a standalone spot. New Orleans might be the worst team in the league this season and the Chargres have to be apprehensive after already losing one of their best players for the easons.
New Orleans does a quarterback battle though, so I guess there is that.
Tyler Shough was actually one of the first quarterbacks taken in this years draft but the early reviews have not been good. Spencer Rattler has more experience but that might not be a benefit. None of this is helping first year Saints coach Kellen Moore.
The Chargers, led by Jim Harbaugh, just want to get to the season in one piece. They are likely to be going through the motions.
New Orleans Saints
The NFC South is considered one of the worst divisions in the NFL and the Saints are the consensus worst team in that group. This is Year 1 for their coach too so there is a chance this group has not even hit rock bottom yet, after winning just five games a year ago. Here is an interesting consideration, they might be a better bet to win more games in August than during the season.
Unless you are a die-hard for quarterback battles there is just not a lot to look for in this game, other than the uniforms look real enough.
Los Angeles Chargers
In the Hall of Fame game I was “high” on the Chargers because I liked their depth at quarterback for this stage of the season. Justin Herbert is as secure as any starter on any team in the league but wut Trey Lance and Taylor Heinecke they have a couple of guys who can move the ball and put points on the board.
The primary concern with the Chargers in their second preseason effort is whether the recent injury to Rashawn Slater makes them even more gun shy to play anyone of consequence a snap more than necessary.
4* Free Week 1 Preseason NFL Betting Prediction: Los Angeles -0.5
This one is essentially a pick’em which feels like really good value. I guess New Orleans is a wild card in a lot of ways but consistency can be a virtue this time of the year.
We just have no clue what the Saints are going to look like and even though I do not like to buy in too much to camp hype I do think that negativity this time of year is daunting.
To win in the preseason we are looking for function and even a limited Chargers team will play hard and they have the advantage of having already kicked off some rust. I think that can matter a lot, especially against a team like New Orleans where there is a lot of new.
I feel good about Los Angeles but still suggest you probably avert your eyes. There is not going to be a lot to see here.
