Red Wings vs. Canadiens Gameday
The Detroit Red Wings visit the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre on Saturday, October 10, 2026. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 PM ET. Both Atlantic Division clubs are trying to get their seasons moving in the right direction.
Detroit enters 1-3-0 under Todd McLellan.
The Wings are playing their second game in as many nights after hosting Seattle on Friday. Another road assignment gives them precious little recovery time. Apparently, the schedule makers aren’t handing out sympathy cards this October.
Detroit’s quick turnaround meets a Montreal team trying to stop an ugly early-season slide.
Montreal is 1-2-1 under Martin St. Louis. The Canadiens have dropped three straight and return to home ice searching for a more complete performance.
Detroit won two of the three meetings between these clubs last season.
That included a shutout victory at Bell Centre. Montreal has enough offensive talent to make life difficult, but its early results have raised uncomfortable questions. Both coaching staffs have plenty to address before this one gets underway.

Detroit Red Wings vs. Montreal Canadiens Odds & Previous Games
Montreal opened as a -216 moneyline favorite, with Detroit at +181. The Canadiens were -1.5 (+115) on the puck line, while the Wings were +1.5 (-138). The total opened at 6.5, with the Under priced at -125.
That’s a substantial price for a favorite still searching for consistency.
Detroit beat Ottawa 5-3 for its lone victory. The Wings also lost 2-0 to the Rangers, 3-2 to Winnipeg and 6-3 to Seattle. Friday’s defeat was particularly frustrating after Detroit controlled much of the opening period.
Montreal began with a 3-2 victory over Toronto. The Canadiens then lost 6-5 to Pittsburgh, 6-4 to Carolina and 5-2 to Nashville.
That’s 17 goals surrendered during the three-game skid.
Detroit’s games have generally featured less scoring than Montreal’s recent outings. That contrast makes the total worth examining alongside the moneyline. Compare prices at your preferred sportsbooks before deciding whether the favorite deserves such an expensive ticket.

Canadiens Stats
Montreal has scored 14 goals through four games, supported by 22 assists. The Canadiens have generated 102 shots on goal, giving them opportunities even when their execution hasn’t cooperated.
Nick Suzuki leads the offense with three goals and four assists.
Suzuki remains the centerpiece of Montreal’s attack. Ivan Demidov’s absence removes another dangerous option, leaving more responsibility on the healthy forwards. That’s not exactly the depth chart Martin St. Louis hoped to be working with this early.
The Canadiens have allowed 16 goals and recorded 48 blocked shots.
Montreal has the offensive talent to win games, but its defensive coverage has made life unnecessarily difficult.
Jakub Dobes and Jacob Fowler are the available goaltending options following Samuel Montembeault’s lower-body injury. Montreal announced Friday that Montembeault would miss 10 to 14 days.
Neither available goalie has been confirmed as Saturday’s starter.
Kaiden Guhle is also sidelined, creating another hole in Montreal’s defensive group. The Canadiens need cleaner breakouts and better protection around their crease. Asking the goaltender to solve every defensive mistake is a terrific way to ruin his evening.
Red Wings Stats
Detroit has scored 10 goals through four games, with 18 assists. The Wings have converted four power-play opportunities, providing some encouragement on special teams. Their five-on-five offense still needs to produce more consistently.
Viktor Arvidsson has scored in three consecutive games.
Alex DeBrincat has been one of Detroit’s more dangerous forwards, while Lucas Raymond continues to create chances. Michael Brandsegg-Nygård also supplied his first NHL goal against Seattle. The Wings need more of that supporting production rather than depending on the same names every night.
Detroit has allowed 13 goals, with John Gibson handling most of the early workload.
Gibson was replaced by Daniil Tarasov during Friday’s loss after Seattle took control in the second period. The quick turnaround leaves Detroit with a goaltending decision, and neither option has been confirmed as Saturday’s starter.
The Wings must improve their defensive coverage regardless of who gets the assignment.
Mason Appleton, J.T. Compher and Marco Kasper have been dealing with injuries. Those absences complicate Detroit’s forward rotation and leave McLellan with fewer options for managing difficult matchups.
Detroit’s power play offers a useful weapon if Montreal takes careless penalties. The Wings still need better execution at even strength, particularly when protecting the puck through the neutral zone. Giving the Canadiens free entries would be a generous gesture nobody in Detroit requested.
Detroit Red Wings vs. Montreal Canadiens bottom line: Detroit’s special teams offer some encouragement, but Montreal’s scoring talent and unsettled goaltending make this a difficult matchup to trust from either side.

Red Wings Canadiens Free Pick: Red Wings ML +181
Here is my Red Wings Canadiens free pick: Detroit Red Wings ML +181. I’m getting a healthy underdog price against a Montreal club that hasn’t done much to justify laying -216. The Canadiens have the bigger reputation right now, but reputation doesn’t cash tickets. Detroit’s back-to-back is the obvious objection. I’ll account for the tired legs, but I’m not automatically throwing out a road dog because the schedule makers weren’t feeling generous.
At +181, the Wings need to win roughly 36% of comparable matchups to break even.
Montreal is carrying the favorite’s price and the pressure, while Detroit only needs one disciplined road performance to make this ticket pay.
My betting angle starts with the opening period. If Detroit stays organized, avoids unnecessary penalties and keeps the crowd from feeding off an early Montreal surge, the home side has to earn every inch of that expensive number.
There’s another wrinkle I like: the longer this stays close, the more uncomfortable the favorite’s position becomes. A tight third period puts the burden on Montreal to produce a winner, and I’d much rather be holding +181 than sweating -216 in that situation. The Wings don’t need to dominate possession or win a beauty contest.
They need a manageable game, a couple of timely finishes and enough discipline to avoid giving Montreal easy opportunities.
I’ll accept the scheduling risk for this payout.
My NHL betting system has me on the Wings ML +181. It’s national dog day!
