Wednesday, January 11th, finds the Phoenix Suns playing the Denver Nuggets in the second of four meetings this season. The teams first played on Christmas Day in the best game of the holiday needing overtime to give the Nuggets the 128-125 win.
Phoenix will host the next two matches between the clubs on March 31st and April 6th.
The Suns are completing a back-to-back set having shocked the Warriors beating them 125-113 with a severely decimated group on Tuesday, while the Nuggets last played Monday defeating the Lakers 122-109.
Last season the clubs played three times with Phoenix winning two of the three contests. The Suns hold the all-time record having bested the Nuggets in 100 of their 186 matches.
*Editor’s Note: Statistics and rankings are current as of this writing, Tuesday evening, January 10th. Numbers may vary slightly entering games on Wednesday, January 11th.
Phoenix Suns
It was bad enough the Suns were having to navigate the loss of Devin Booker but learned they wouldn’t have Chris Paul or Deandre Ayton on Tuesday. Coupling that with the news Steph Curry was back and 99 times out of 100 that results in a loss.
Instead, the Suns who were missing four starters and six of eight regular rotation players found a way to scrap out a victory and did it in a pretty decisive fashion.
With their recent struggles, the offense just keeps slipping lower with the team averaging 113.0 points per game dropping to 17th (they ranked top 10 the majority of the season).
They are shooting 46.5% from the field and 38.4% from the perimeter ranking 20th and third overall.
Defense:
Despite the offensive drop, Phoenix is gaining on the defensive end with opponents scoring 111.0 points ranking seventh.
Meanwhile, they limit opponent shooting to 46.9% from the field and 35.9% from the perimeter ranking 13th and 18th respectively. All improved ratings this week.
Although the updated injury report hasn’t been submitted, based on who played Tuesday, the expectation is Paul (hip) and Ayton (ankle) who were out Tuesday will be questionable at best. Landry Shamet (hip) is also questionable.
Cameron Payne (foot), Devin Booker (groin), Cameron Johnson (knee), and Jae Crowder (trade request) are all out indefinitely.
Denver Nuggets
The Nuggets have company now atop the West with the Grizzlies but as both teams continue to compile victories they’re simultaneously creating some distance from themselves and the chase pack (now up to 2.5 games).
Getting to be at home is huge at this time of year when teams are feeling the wear and tear of the season and can’t wait to get to the All-Star Break.
Prior to the trade deadline (February 9th) the Nuggets play 10 of their 15 matches at Ball Arena. Granted, that final week before the break they’ll play three of four on the road but two are against lottery teams.
Lethal Offense
Denver ranks fifth in scoring averaging 116.8 points per game and is highly efficient shooting the second-best percentage from the field 50.8%, and the highest perimeter percentage 39.9%.
Denver ranks 16th for opponent scoring allowing 113.7 points while limiting foes to 48.1% from the field and 35.5% from deep ranking 25th and 12th.
Bruce Brown (thumb sprain), Zeke Nnaji (knee contusion), and Bones Hyland (thigh contusion) are probable. Peyton Watson (groin) is questionable. Jeff Green (hand fracture) and Collin Gillespie (leg fracture) are out.

Free Phoenix Suns vs. Denver Nuggets NBA Prediction:
Recently a few of the younger clubs have delivered offensive outbursts only to struggle to score in the very next game. The Suns aren’t a young team but being so shorthanded, playing in a back-to-back in Denver could result in a huge drop off.
If the Nuggets are smart they’ll jump on the Suns from the tip to take an early double-digit lead and then ride it to game end. As frequent readers know, I don’t typically go for the extra juicy spreads but in this case, I’m making an exception.
