The lone first-round series going the distance features the fifth-seeded Orlando Magic and fourth-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers. Orlando pushed the series to a Game 7 after winning 103-96 on Friday.
The Celtics await the winner of this series having been idle since Wednesday.
Season Series
The teams split the regular season series each winning twice. Last season the Cavaliers swept the four-game regular season series and also hold the all-time record between the clubs with 65 victories in 126 matches.
This is the second time the clubs are facing each other in the postseason with the Magic winning 4-2 in 2009.
*Editor’s Note: Statistics and rankings are current as of this writing, on Saturday, May 4th. Numbers may vary slightly entering games on Sunday, May 5th.
Orlando Magic
It took the young Magic a couple of games to figure out the difference of playing in the postseason but they’ve proven to be quick learners. Defense got them their seed and kept them in matches while offense remains problematic.
That said, the Big 3 of the Magic is beginning to figure things out as Paolo Banchero (27 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists), Franz Wagner (26 points, 5 rebounds, 2 blocks), and Jalen Suggs (22 points, 6 rebounds, 6 triples) each scored over 20 points Friday.
Magic Stats
The Magic ranks 22nd offensively (112.9) and third defensively (110.8) while possessing the 14th-rated net differential of plus +2.2 this season.
Through six playoff games, they rank 13th offensively (107.0) and second defensively (98.9) with a plus +8.1 net differential ranking fourth.
Orlando was one of the better bets against the spread this season, possessing a 55-33 record through 88 games.
Magic Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Gary Harris, SG (left last game/questionable Friday — hamstring)
Cleveland Cavaliers
Donovan Mitchell had struggled in Orlando before Game 6 averaging 15.5 points but he blew up his stat average dropping 50 points on Friday.
That was more than half of his team’s output but he did it while appearing to have re-injured his knee as he was visibly limping during the match.
Darius Garland was also better, offering 21 points, six rebounds, and five assists but the duo of Evan Mobley (3 points) and Marcus Morris Sr. (2 points) combined to shoot 2 of 12 for five points.
If the Cavs are to move on they’ll need another standout performance from Mitchell and he’ll need more help on offense.
Cavaliers Stats
Through the season, Cleveland ranked 16th offensively (114.7), and seventh defensively (112.1) with a plus +2.5 net differential that ranked 12th overall.
Through the sixth game of the playoffs, they rank 15th offensively (98.9) and fourth defensively (107.0) with a minus -8.1 net differential ranking 13th.
Cleveland wasn’t a strong bet against the spread with a 40-46-2 record through 88 contests.
Cavaliers Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Jarrett Allen, C (questionable — ribs)
- Craig Porter Jr., PG (OUT indefinitely — ankle)
- Ty Jerome, PG (OUT indefinitely—ankle)
- Dean Wade, PG (OUT indefinitely —knee)

Free Orlando Magic vs. Cleveland Cavaliers NBA Prediction:
As I’ve noted repeatedly in the game previews the Cavaliers WANTED to play the Magic and purposely punted their final match of the season to draw them. They enter Game 7 with all the pressure shifted onto their shoulders while the health of Mitchell and Allen is precarious at best.
Moreover, the Cavs have scored over 100 points just once in this entire series and they’ve become transparent on who will have the ball in the fourth quarter and clutch time (Mitchell scored all 18 fourth-quarter points for Cleveland on Friday).
Orlando is young and inexperienced but might be just plucky enough not to feel the pressure of the moment having built confidence throughout this series.
The x-factor for the Magic is coach Jamahl Mosley who’ll need to balance the pre-game motivational speech with not letting them get too overwhelmed by the moment.
