Saturday, October 28th finds Atlantic Division rivals the Philadelphia 76ers and Toronto Raptors tipping off at Scotiabank Arena. Philly lost a 117-118 heartbreaker to the Bucks Thursday.
Toronto got first-time head coach Darko Rajakovic his first win defeating the Timberwolves 97-93 on Wednesday, and will complete a back-to-back set that featured a 103-104 overtime loss to the Bulls in possibly the strangest game ever on Friday.
This is the first time Nick Nurse will return to face his former team and after a mediocre season where there were hints of controversy behind the scenes, it’s anyone’s guess what type of response he’ll receive from the Raptors faithful.
Season Series
Last season the 76ers took three of the Atlantic Division rival’s four matches while Toronto holds the all-time record between the clubs with 62 victories in 107 matches.
Philadelphia 76ers
James Harden wasn’t with the team in Milwaukee and the belief is he won’t be in Toronto (or at least if he shows up, isn’t expected to play). His presence would help the 76ers but his absence wasn’t as obvious as you’d suspect in the opener.
Philly pushed the Bucks to the final buzzer losing by a single point mostly due to Lillard taking over in the clutch (or Dame Time if you will).
Tyrese Maxey was the main benefactor of Harden’s absence scoring 31 points (10-22) adding eight assists while Joel Embiid offered 24 points, 7 rebounds, and six assists but had SEVEN turnovers. Kelly Oubre scored 27 of the Sixers’ 32 bench points.

Darko Rajakovic definitely has Toronto playing with more freedom offensively although the half-court offense is still a work in progress.
Still, the strength of this club is their defense which was on full display in the home opener holding Minny to 34% from the field and 25.8 from deep, blocking 11 shots and creating 9 steals.
O.G. Anunoby (2 steals, 3 blocks) and Scottie Barnes (2 steals, 5 blocks) were particularly successful and made life difficult for the Wolves two stars (Anthony Edwards, Karl-Anthony Towns).
In fact, when O.G. guarded Ant he shot 1 of 10 and Barnes held Cat to 2 of 9 when he was on the big man.
Toronto followed up in Chicago by holding the Bulls to 37.4% from the field and 20.5% from deep with none of the starters registering a positive differential.
Anunoby had to leave mid-4Q in the Bulls game due to cramps while Barnes registered a triple-double of 22 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists (plus two blocks).

Toronto also played four preseason games going unbeaten (4-0). Last season they finished ranking 15th offensively (114.3), and fourth defensively (110.9) with the fifth-best net differential (+3.4).

There will be the added motivation of the Raptors wanting to beat Nurse’s new team but I like the rested team to get their first win of the season.
