The first-round playoff series between the fifth-seeded Orlando Magic and fourth-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers tips off on Saturday, April 20th.
Cleveland punted their opportunity to secure the second or third seed by resting the majority of their core in the final game of the season versus a G-League version of the Hornets Orlando struggled to close the season losing three of their final four matches.
Season Series
The teams split the regular season series each winning twice. Last season the Cavaliers swept the four-game regular season series and also hold the all-time record between the clubs with 65 victories in 126 matches.
This is the second time the clubs are facing each other in the postseason with the Magic winning 4-2 in 2009.
Orlando Magic
Offense isn’t the Magic calling card as they struggle to put points on the scoreboard having the worst offensive rating of all playoff teams. If Orlando is to advance out of this series it’ll be due to the stellar defense Jamahl Mosley has his young club bought into.
In fact, some of the defensive matchups could be the difference in this series with Jalen Suggs keying on Donovan Mitchell. More importantly, Mosley has slowly increased Jonathan Isaac’s playing time occasionally starting him.
The latter is good enough to vie for Defensive Player of the Year but didn’t log enough games/minutes this season. The big question is whether Mosley will opt to start him as he truly is a difference-maker.
Magic Stats
The Magic ranks 22nd offensively (112.9) and third defensively (110.8) while possessing the 14th-rated net differential of plus +2.2 this season.
Orlando was one of the better bets against the spread this season, possessing a 51-31 record through 82 games.
Magic Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- No injuries to report
Cleveland Cavaliers
There is no denying the Cavaliers were sending a message in the final game by seemingly opting to lose to drop out of the area in the playoff bracket that would find them facing the 76ers or Heat in the first round.
It begs the question of how confident the team can be when their front office is manipulating wins/losses to get their preferred first-round opponent. That’s a dangerous game to play, especially since they’ll still be facing the Celtics (presumably) in the second round, and getting there isn’t a given.
Cavaliers Stats
Through the season, Cleveland ranked 16th offensively (114.7), and seventh defensively (112.1) with a plus +2.5 net differential that ranked 12th overall.
Cleveland wasn’t a strong bet against the spread with a 38-42-2 record through 82 contests.
Cavaliers Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Sam Merrill, PG (questionable — neck)
- Donovan Mitchell, SG (questionable — knee)
- Caris LeVert, SG (questionable — knee)
- Darius Garland, PG (questionable — back)
- Craig Porter Jr., PG (questionable — ankle)

Free Orlando Magic vs. Cleveland Cavaliers NBA Prediction:
Although the injury lists Mitchell as questionable he indicated his knee is 100 percent healthy and he’s not only ready to play but is anxious to make a deep run. That may be difficult given how the Cavaliers played post All-Star break losing 17 of their 29 matches.
Orlando fared better but also struggled down the stretch. Ultimately this series has the potential for a throw-back old-school defensive battle and should be a lengthy series.
Home court should prove valuable but the young Magic are chomping at the bit and have nothing to lose while the Cavs have pressure to succeed given their early exit last season.
Losing the first game would only serve to increase the spotlight and pressure on Cleveland but given Orlando’s youth I’ll take the Cavs to squeak out the first game.
