The Cleveland Cavaliers host the New York Knicks, on Sunday, March 3rd in their third and final meeting this season. Both teams have won once so this match will determine the tiebreak.
New York last played on Thursday losing 99-110 to the Warriors while the Cavaliers played on Friday in a winning 110-100 effort versus the Pistons.
Season Series
Last season New York won three of the four matches and holds the all-time record between the clubs with 120 victories in 225 matches versus the Cavaliers.
*Editor’s Note: Statistics and rankings are current as of this writing, Saturday, March 2nd. Numbers may vary slightly entering games on Sunday, March 3rd.
New York Knicks
At one point in time the Knicks looked like a lock to secure the second seed but then the injuries piled up. They enter this match seeded fourth but the 76ers and Heat are in hot pursuit just a half-game and game back.
Since returning from the break they are 2-3 and are having difficulty securing wins versus the elite teams (although they did beat Philly minus Embiid). They have the 15th-ranked closing schedule and should get all three of Anunoby, Randle and Robinson back before the end of the season.
The red flag is how tired Jalen Brunson will be by the time the postseason starts as he’s trying to carry the team in the absence of his starting teammates.
Knicks Stats
With the injuries, New York continues to slide ranking tied for ninth offensively (117.3) and tied for 10th defensively (113.4) while their net differential is plus +3.9 which ranks ninth overall.
The Knicks continue to perform well against the spread with a 31-28-1 record through 60 contests.
Knicks Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Julius Randle, PF (OUT indefinitely— shoulder)
- OG Anunoby, SF (OUT indefinitely— elbow)
- Mitchell Robinson, C (OUT indefinitely — ankle)
Cleveland Cavaliers
Perhaps it’s just me but I haven’t bought into this version of the Cavaliers as being a contender. Their record speaks for itself but they’ve also had the benefit of a soft schedule but have the sixth most difficult slate to finish the season.
What stands out is the Cavs played arguably better when Evan Mobley and Darius Garland were out.
In my humble opinion that’s because Donovan Mitchell plays better when he has the ball in his hand predominantly and Jarrett Allen excels when he’s not stymied having to worry about spacing with Mobley playing alongside him.
Cavaliers Stats
Through 59 games, Cleveland ranks 15th offensively (116.2), and second defensively (110.3) with a plus +5.8 net differential that ranks in a tie for fourth overall.
The Cavaliers have a middling record against the spread posting a 29-28-2 performance this season.
Cavaliers Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Caris LeVert, SF (questionable — elbow)
- Isaac Okoro, SF (upgraded to probable — back)
- Tristan Thompson, C (OUT for 25 games—suspension)
- Donovan Mitchell, PG (questionable—knee)
- Ty Jerome, PG (OUT indefinitely—ankle)

Free New York Knicks vs. Cleveland Cavaliers NBA Prediction:
Following up on my point about the Cavs not being a team other opponents are scared of, 27 of their 39 wins came against teams seeded lower than eighth.
Of the other 12 wins, only five were against clubs seeded fourth or higher and two of those wins featured missing opponent starters which they’ll benefit from again Sunday versus the Knicks.
Ultimately, I still like the Cavs to win this as they excel at home but ask me the same question when the Knicks are fully healthy and you’ll get a different answer.
