Tuesday, October 25th, finds the Golden State Warriors and Phoenix Suns playing for the first time this season. The Pacific Division rivals will face each other four times with Phoenix hosting again on November 16th while the Warriors will play host on January 10th and March 13th.
Both teams played on Sunday with the Warriors defeating the Kings while the Suns handed the Clippers their first loss of the season.
Last season, the teams split the series by each winning twice. The Suns have won 144 of the 255 matches played between the clubs all-time.
Golden State Warriors
Through the first week of the season, the Warriors collected their championship rings and seemingly moved quickly past the Draymond Green – Jordan Poole punch controversy.
The core is displaying their championship mettle but Steve Kerr is already showing signs he’ll temper the vets’ minutes to ensure he gets Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins, and Green to the postseason as rested and healthy as possible.
That means the youngsters will be afforded both time and opportunity to play. It also means there will be growing pains. Through their three matches, the youngsters have forced Kerr to extend his vets’ minutes longer than he wanted (or sub them back in sooner).
Given their record (2-1) there is no reason to overreact and in truth, this group and head coach are more open to losing a few games than they could win in order to allow the youngsters to learn from their mistakes.
Donte DiVincenzo (hamstring) is out Tuesday while Andre Iguodala (hip) remains sidelined having yet to play this season.
Phoenix Suns
While the Dubs offer confidence they’re precisely who we think they are, the Suns are a completely different story. Sure, they have precisely the same 2-1 record but they aren’t instilling confidence this is the 64 win team of 2021-22.
First, there is the oddity of getting used to not seeing Jae Crowder in the lineup — and no he wasn’t a killer but his absence is palpable because of how much physicality he brought defensively.
Next, there is the shift from Chris Paul being the clutch-time God to him not being on the floor to close a game. Was that simply Monty Williams reacting to a bad matchup (Mavericks)? Or is this more a sign of things to come as the 37-year-old is no longer expected to play like he’s 25?
Regardless of the answer to the above, having watched their three matches this iteration of the Suns doesn’t instill the same level of confidence.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Warriors are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games following an ATS loss.
- The Suns are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
- Over is 6-2 in Warriors last 8 after allowing 100 points or more in their previous game.
- Under is 6-0 in Suns last 6 when their opponent allows 100 points or more in their previous game.
- Under is 13-3 in the last 16 meetings between these two clubs
Free Golden State Warriors vs. Phoenix Suns NBA Prediction:
Devin Booker is still ‘the man’ for the Suns but they’ve regressed (even if ever so slightly), and with the Clippers, Nuggets, and others healthier that should equate to a drop down the ladder.
With these two clubs being clearly in front of the other Western teams for much of last season their games were all highly competitive. I think the Suns will feel this is a must-win whereas the Warriors will view it as ‘nice to win’.
My gut says the refs will reward the Suns at home and initially I was going to lean toward Phoenix but I can’t shake the fact the Warriors score 15 more points per game.
Granted they played the Lakers and Kings as part of their three-game mix but as much as my mind tells me the Suns should win my gut says the Warriors get the ‘W’.
