Tuesday, March 1st, finds the Detroit Pistons and Washington Wizards playing the third of four scheduled matches. Washington is up 2-0 having won 119-116 in overtime on December 8th and 103-94 on February 14th. Detroit will host the final game on March 25th.
Through the last four games, the Pistons are 3-1 while the Wizards are 1-3 with Detroit defeating the Hornets 127-126 in overtime Sunday while the Wizards lost 86-92 to the Cavaliers on Saturday.
Last season, the squads played three times with the Wizards winning two of the three contests in the regular-season series. The Pistons hold the all-time record having bested the Wizards in 157 of their 293 matches.
Detroit Pistons
For the first time since the calendar turned the Pistons are on a hot streak. Or at least for a team with only 14 wins this season the closest thing to it.
They began 2022 with five wins in eight games and through their last four games have won three. More impressively those victories came against the Cavaliers, Celtics, and Hornets in overtime.
Although it might sound simplified – it feels like a good portion of the success is the team has found chemistry and more specifically Cade Cunningham and Jerami Grant have figured out how to help each other.
Their learning curve to develop chemistry kept getting postponed due to injury with the rookie sustaining an ankle injury that kept him out of the preseason and five of the Pistons’ first six games. After playing only 19 games together Grant got injured missing 24 games.
Since Grant returned the duo has found their mojo. Saddiq Bey has also grown and developed into a talent worthy of calling this trio the Pistons Big 3. Specifically, through the last six matches, Detroit are playing .500 (3-3) and this trio are provided a balanced attack:
- Grant: 17.7 points, 2.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.0 steals, 1.0 blocks
- Cunningham: 17.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.5 assists
- Bey: 18.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists
That’s a combined total of 54 points, 14.4 rebounds, and 9.9 assists.
Although there is still ample room for growth and improvement a few tweaks to the roster this offseason could find them ascending sooner than imagined.
Frank Jackson (back) and Bagley III (ankle) are both questionable for Tuesday versus the Wizards.
Washington Wizards
While the Pistons were expected to be a lottery-bound team the Wizards made moves in the offseason with hopes of being among the group at the top of the East.
Instead, they have fewer wins than the Pistons since the calendar turned and sit 11th, two games back of a play-in seed. In fairness, the two key stars aren’t playing with Bradley Beal done for the season and Kristaps Porzingis (knee) yet to play since being traded to Washington.
They have four wins in their last 16 matches and aside from Kyle Kuzma are struggling to find consistency. Watch a Wizards game and you’ll come away wondering what their identity is and whether that answer will be obvious once Beal and the Unicorn return.
Kristaps Porzingis (knee) was downgraded to doubtful for Tuesday versus the Pistons. Bradley Beal (wrist) had season-ending surgery.

Free Detroit Pistons vs. Washington Wizards NBA Prediction:
Punctuating how far the Wizards have fallen I’m more confident in the Piston entering this match and therefore suggest taking the points and Detroit (and I won’t be surprised if they also get the victory).
