Tuesday, October 25th, finds the Detroit Pistons and Washington Wizards playing for the first time this season. The Pistons will host the teams on February 1st while they’ll wrap up the season series back in Washington on March 14th.
The Pistons won their season opener but subsequently lost their next two matches to the Knicks and Pacers. The Wizards are off to a good start to the season with victories versus the Pacers and Bulls while their lone loss occurred in overtime versus the Cavaliers.
Last season, the squads played four times with the Wizards sweeping the regular-season series. The Pistons hold the all-time record having bested the Wizards in 157 of their 295 matches.
Detroit Pistons
It’s been a tale of two sides of the court for the Pistons in the early season. That quintet has feasted offensively scoring 121.8 points per 100 possessions which registers as the fourth-best mark among starters who’ve played 35 or more cumulative minutes this season (14 linesups qualify).
Conversely, that same group of five has posted the worst defensive mark out of those 14 lineups allowing 127 points per 100 possessions. This is NOT a Dwane Casey defensive squad by any stretch of the imagination.
With much of their core returning it’s odd how different this iteration of the Pistons plays defense versus 2021-22. Last season they ranked third-best at containing opponents on the break but rank 24th through the early season allowing almost double the point total (11 vs. 18.3).
Oddly the Pistons rank top 10 on the glass both in total (7th: 47.7) and offensive boards (8th – 14.0) but that factor is offset by the fact they also allow opponents to feast on the boards. Case in point, Detroit ranks 28th/24th for opponent total/offensive rebounds (52.3/13.7 rebounds).
That’s impacting other areas of the game as Pistons’ opponents score 54 paint points per game (tied 22nd) and 18.0 second-chance points (tied 23rd).
Ultimately, they’re young, developing, and clearly keeping the objective of staying in the mix for the Victor Wembanyama sweepstakes.
Alec Burks (foot) is questionable for Tuesday while Marvin Bagley III (knee) is out until mid-November.
Washington Wizards
Although the Wizards have played well to start the season I’d caution not to get too caught up in the hype. Sure this team features superstar Bradley Beal, prior All-Star Kristaps Porzingis, plus arguably a perfect number three offensive gifted score in Kyle Kuzma.
However, the depth of this squad is nonexistent unless numerous players take a growth leap simultaneously. Moreover, a commonality of the Wizards’ recent history is getting out to hot starts before fading.
After three games the Wizards rank 27th offensively and ninth defensively. A closer glance might offer a better idea of who this team really is…
Their two wins occurred versus the tanking Pacers and middling Bulls while they lost in overtime to the Cavaliers who were missing Darius Garland and figuring out their chemistry with Donovan Mitchell.
Corey Kispert (ankle) is questionable for Tuesday.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Pistons are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.
- The Wizards are 5-12 ATS in their last 17 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.
- Over is 7-0 in the Pistons’ last 7 overall.
- Under is 5-1 in the Wizards’ last 6 overall.
- The Pistons are 1-7 ATS in the last 8 meetings in Washington
Free Detroit Pistons vs. Washington Wizards NBA Prediction:
The issue for Casey will be keeping his charges motivated to compete (without actually winning) while simultaneously making sure they don’t regress defensively.
Conversely, Wes Unseld has his team committed defensively but if (when) they start losing to the better tier of teams will he be able to keep this group invested in that physical battle and the toll it takes?
We’ll see how those dynamics shift over the course of the next month or two but for now, I like the Wizards to win but the Pistons to keep it closer than the spread.
