Nuggets vs. Thunder Gameday
Denver travels to Oklahoma City on October 22nd for an NBA matchup at Paycom Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 9:30 ET, with both teams seeking to start the season strong and a desire to finish first in the Conference en route to an NBA championship.
While the Nuggets lost Peyton Watson and made minor tweaks to their roster this offseason, the Thunder sent out some of their top-end talent to clear up space both financially and within the roster for their ascending youth.
Nikola Jokic was regarded as the best player in the NBA, but with back-to-back MVPs and an opening night statement peformance has Shai Gilgeous-Alexander pushed Wemby to the sidelines and the Joker off his throne?
In the category of it’s only one game, but… the way SGA hit the hardwood on opening night sent reverberations throughout the association. The mild-mannered, soft-spoken Canadian was much more outwardly demonstrative, showcasing a competitive grit that wasn’t necessarily obvious in prior seasons.
Several times he clenched his fists after key shots, got in coach Mark Daigneault’s face for removing him from the court, and looked driven toward winning for the full 48 minutes.
At game end, SGA spoke of how motivated and hungry his club is, and based on what we saw, it’s clear who is leading that charge in the locker room.

Denver Nuggets vs. OKC Thunder Odds & Previous Games
The Nuggets were considered the third team in the mix with the Thunder and Spurs but with changes this offseason most pundits have them well below that top tier.
If Jokic has anything to say about it, they won’t be overlooked for long, but they’ll need to answer the critics out of the gate.
They finished the preseason 3-2 but looked like a team in flux at times.
OKC had a rough preseason, but used the time to integrate all their new faces. The Game 1 win versus the Spurs showcased just how successful they were and cleared up any questions about their top-tier depth.

Nuggets vs. Thunder Key Matchup
No surprise here, with two bona fide MVP candidates lacing up the kicks, it’s the Joker versus SGA matchup all eyes will be focused on.
However, the more compelling aspect of the game plan will be how Denver stacks up versus the Thunder’s depth.

The big question is who is the third-best player on the hardwood? Is it Jamal Murray, Jaylen Williams or Chet Holmgren?
Following on the latter two in that mix, ultimately, the Thunder’s depth is the key problem David Adelman needs to address. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have the horses to match up individually.
Denver Nuggets vs. OKC Thunder bottom line: They say defense wins championships, and if we are to overreact to one game to draw conclusions, the hot take from Tuesday night is that the Thunder are poised to have by far the best defense in the association.
Holding Victor Wembanyama to 1-of-13 shooting was probably an aberration, but still, OKC sure did look impressive as they swarmed the Spurs.

Nuggets Thunder Free Pick: Oklahoma City -7.5
Here is my Nuggets Thunder free pick: I’m playing OKC to cover the 7.5-point spread. Simply put, the Thunder look like a team who spent the offseason enraged about not being able to defend their title and feel like one got away.
Now that they are fully healthy and a slew of young up-and-coming youngsters are in the mix, it’s hard not to think they are the definitive bet to win Larry O’B.
OKC was a well oiled machine in their opening night match shooting 45% from the field as well as the perimeter. More importantly, they held the Spurs to 39% and 27% respectively.
Aside from depth, the big question the Nuggets will need to address is where their 3-point shooting comes from this season with the loss of some key contributors. Will Gordon, Murray, and Johnson simply make more attempts, or are there options on the bench for Jokic to find?
I’m very intrigued by this early season matchup with two of my favorite players in the mix, but what I’ve seen in preseason and opening night has me leaning heavily toward OKC being on a mission we can’t ignore.

Get Up reacts to OKC beating the Spurs:
“This game to me felt like a referendum on the Thunder reminding everybody, ‘We’re still the team.’ Everyone got swept up, certainly here, and the Knicks are what they are, so the whole world forgot about Oklahoma City.
The reality was Oklahoma City saying, ‘Hey, if we’d been healthy last year, it still would have been us. We hate these guys. We’re better than them. We lost to them in seven without our second-best player.’
To me, this felt like a night where the Thunder were making a statement.” ⚡️
