Here’s why I’m backing Detroit ATS in my Pistons Heat free pick & gambling prediction for this matchup.
Pistons vs. Heat Gameday
Detroit travels to Miami on October 23rd for an NBA matchup at the Kaseya Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:00 ET, with both teams seeking to get off to a strong season start given how competitive the Eastern Conference is this season.
Miami won the series against the Pistons last season 2-1 but they were a significantly different roster then. Meanwhile, the Pistons have bolstered their perimeter shooting with offseason moves.
Detroit arrives following an impressive 30-point turnaround to collect a victory on opening night, while the Heat got routed by the Timberwolves, leaving more questions than answers about their team identity.

Detroit Pistons vs. Miami Heat Odds & Previous Games
Depth is a question mark for the Pistons, but after opening night, perhaps Javonte Green has proven he’s someone J.B. Bickerstaff will need to extend more minutes.
He was nailed to the bench in the first half, but his 19 second-half points sparked the comeback that led to victory.
In contrast, Erik Spoelstra couldn’t find any answers for the Timberwolves, and their offense was a mess.
Sure, Giannis Antetokounmpo will still deliver on his promise, but in the early going, his fit with the Heat resembles something akin to what he had in Milwaukee!

Pistons Stats
Detroit ranked 16th offensively (116.8), second defensively (108.7), and tied for third in net rating (+8.1) while running a pace of 100.00, which ranked 19th in the association.
The East’s top-place Pistons averaged 27.5 assists (13th) and 45.6 rebounds (eighth). Detroit scored 117.5 points per game while its opponents averaged 109.6 points.
Detroit loves scoring in the paint, but have bolstered their 3-point shooting this season. Still, don’t expect the Pistons to change identities as they look to retain their top ranked 2-point shooting prowess and utilize Jalen Duren for easy buckets in the paint.
Team leaders* in the key categories were Cade Cunningham for scoring (24.5), assists (9.9), and steals (1.5), while Jalen Duren led rebounding (10.7), and Isaiah Stewart led for blocks (1.6).
Perimeter scoring was a weakness for the Pistons, who shot with an efficiency of 35.3% as a team, with four players shooting over the league average.

Heat Stats
Miami ranked 12th (115.8) offensively, was tied for 13th defensively (113.6), 13th in net rating (+2.1), and ran with a pace of 104.23, which ranked first overall.
The East’s tenth seed averaged 120.9 points per game, while its opponents averaged 118.5 points. In terms of dimes and boards, Miami averaged 29.0 (fifth) and 46.3 (fourth), respectively.
Miami’s team leaders were Norman Powell for scoring (21.7 points), Davion Mitchell for assists (6.5), Bam Adebayo for rebounds (10.0), Andrew Wiggins for blocks (1.0), while Dru Smith led with 1.4 steals.
Perimeter shooting was a strength for the Heat, who had eight* players shooting above the league average while the team averaged 36.1%.

Pistons vs. Heat Key Matchup
Antetokounmpo will have to face one of the best defensive teams in the Association and if Duren has anything to say about it a hard time getting to the bucket down low.
The question is how Bam Adebayo and Antetokounmpo fit and whether the revamped Miami roster can start to hit more perimeter shots. Certainly replicating their opening night performance (24% from deep) won’t get the job done.

Cade Cunningham will be the main problem for the Heat to address. His leadership is palpable and was key to the comeback on Tuesday.
Who will Spoelstra task with guarding Cunningham? Because, for as solid a defender as Davion Mitchell is, he’s simply too small for the task at hand.
Detroit Pistons vs. Miami Heat bottom line: The key area to watch is the perimeter, with Miami putting up a bevy of shots versus the team that held opponents to the lowest perimeter percentage last season.
If Miami struggles to connect or experiences prolonged shooting funks that’ll be the difference in this match.

Pistons Heat Free Pick: Pistons +1.5
Here is my Pistons Heat free pick: I’m playing the points and Detroit to not only keep it within the 1.5 point spread but to win the match outright.
As much as I don’t expect Miami to have another long stretch of cold shooting I’m not sold on the Heat’s chemistry being resolved yet.
At the moment, the Heat need Bam Adebayo to do more and his fit with Giannis doesn’t seem ideal. He can’t be standing in a corner waiting to receive the ball, but if he tries to drive the paint it might be cutting down Antetokounmpo’s lanes too.
Cunningham does appear ready to take yet another step and so far the additions made this offseason are complementing him well. I still think there may be some issues when they play a more well rounded offense but for this match I like Detroit to continue their winning ways.

Stan Van Gundy is OUT on the Miami Heat and says Bam Adebayo is overrated 😳
“I’m not as high on Miami as people are… The shooting they added compromises them badly on the defensive end of the floor. Even though he was great last year, I’m not sold on Davion Mitchell as a full time starting PG… I’d actually be surprised if they were in the top 6… I’m not a fan of their roster. — I think Wiggins is underrated but I think Bam is a little overrated, particularly at the offensive end of the floor. I’m not sold on them”
Damn.
