Thursday, February 10th, finds the Brooklyn Nets and Washington Wizards playing for the third of four meetings this season. Brooklyn won both prior matches including October 25th (104-90) and January 19th (119-118). The final game will take place on February 17th in Brooklyn.
Brooklyn last played Tuesday losing 91-126 to the Celtics pushing the losing streak to nine in a row while the Wizards last played Monday in a 100-121 loss to the Heat.
All-time the Wizards have the advantage of winning 105 of 197 matches versus the Nets. Last season the teams played on three occasions with Washington taking two of the three contests.
Brooklyn Nets
For the majority of the season the Nets sat either on the East’s top rung or in one of the top three seeds. Then Kevin Durant got injured and they’ve been in free fall ever since.
Not only have they dropped out of home court seeding they’ve tumbled to eighth and would be in the play-in tournament if the season ended today.
More concerning is the rumblings about James Harden and while the franchise is doing their best to contain the situation the fact Harden isn’t playing or actively shutting down his desire to leave is raising red flags.
Kyrie Irving playing in road games hasn’t equated to winning as the team has lost six in a row on the road (and nine overall).
With three superstars on the Nets even with KD out injured, Irving only playing on the road, and the obvious issues the lack of clarity of Harden’s true desires this team still can’t ever be overlooked.
That said, how far can the Nets afford to fall while Durant remains sidelined? They’ve dropped to eighth and if they keep falling they put themselves in jeopardy of falling so far behind the Raptors and Celtics they won’t be able to make up the ground.
What if the Nets end up in the play-in tournament where one or two games could decide if they even make the postseason? Suffice to say it’s no wonder things are tense in Brooklyn.
Nic Claxton (hamstring) is questionable and in another sign Harden (hamstring) may be on the move he was downgraded to out Thursday. Kevin Durant (knee), LaMarcus Aldridge (ankle), Paul Millsap (personal), and Joe Harris (ankle) are all out indefinitely.
Washington Wizards
Big and I mean BIG news out of Washington on Tuesday… superstar Bradley Beal will miss the remainder of the season as he undergoes surgery to repair a torn ligament in his wrist.
This news answers two big questions. First, with Beal having a sub-par shooting season this likely explains why he was struggling. Second this should also put an end to all the trade deadline speculation.
Many wondered if Beal could be a player on the move Thursday, but it’s highly unlikely a club with championship aspirations would be keen to acquire Beal now.
Perhaps that’s also the message the Wizards and Beal are sending – that he’s there for the long term — or at least until he signs his max contract (wink). Although I still wouldn’t count out the 76ers Daryl Morey inquiring, especially if the Harden situation becomes untenable.
Daniel Gafford (COVID) is questionable for Thursday.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Brooklyn are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games.
- Washington are 1-8 ATS in their last 9 games.
- Brooklyn are 5-15 ATS in their last 20 games this season.
- The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Washington’s last 5 games.
Free Brooklyn Nets vs. Washington Wizards NBA Prediction:
Perhaps the Nets will be playing freer as the deadline passes and they know where they stand. Still, regardless of the outcome and in spite of Irving being active the Nets simply don’t have depth or a commitment to defense.
In contrast, the Wizards who are also struggling do have depth and should be able to hand the Nets their 10th consecutive loss. BUT… there is a caveat…
With Beal out for the season Tommy Sheppard could be active looking to upgrade assets and pick up draft picks and that could result in the Wizards moving multiple players and being severely shorthanded come tip-off.
My guess is Sheppard will try to move five players — Spencer Dinwiddie, Montrezl Harrell, Davis Bertans, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and possibly Thomas Bryant while others could be on the block – – for the right return.
However, without that knowledge ahead of time I’m sticking with the Wizards to keep the Nets losing streak active.
