Friday, March 4th, finds Southeast division foes the Atlanta Hawks and Washington Wizards playing the third of four scheduled matches. Each team has won a match this season series with the Hawks winning 118-111 on October 28th and the Wizards winning 122-111 on November 1st.
Through the last four games, the Pistons are 3-1 while the Wizards are 1-3 with Detroit defeating the Hornets 127-126 in overtime Sunday while the Wizards played Tuesday beating the Pistons 116-113.
Last season, the squads played three times with the Hawks winning all three contests. The Hawks hold the all-time record having bested the Wizards in 160 of their 310 matches.
Atlanta Hawks
Sitting in the 10th seed Atlanta hasn’t made the strides Trae Young projected at the trade deadline. Although they’ve had two different seven-game winning streaks they’ve failed to temper it also going on six and five-game losing streaks.
Consistency is their issue and outside the above four streaks, the Hawks have lost two or more consecutive games on nine occasions whereas they’ve only won two consecutive games twice. This is why they can’t make up any ground on the teams above them.
In the last 11 games, the Hawks are vacillating between wins and losses posting a 5-6 record with the win versus the Bulls the most impressive in that streak.
There is bound to be follow-up with the league regarding the free throw disparity as Atlanta made 28 trips to the charity stripe while the Bulls only had seven.
DeMar DeRozan averages eight free throws per game but got a mere two and Young took more (10) than the entire Bulls team. Young led his team with a double-double of 39 points and 13 assists.
Onyeka Okongwu (concussion) is questionable to play versus the Wizards on Friday. John Collins (foot) remains out with no definitive return date.
Washington Wizards
The Wizards are a mirror image of the Hawks’ last 11 games posting a 5-6 record through their last 11 games. Neither of their top stars are playing with Bradley Beal undergoing season-ending wrist surgery while Kristaps Porzingis has yet to make his Wizards debut.
Every game the franchise lists him as questionable then upgrades to downgraded to out. It’s hard to comprehend what the intentions are. Perhaps Porzingis is sulking after being traded or maybe he’s legitimately hurt.
Regardless of the real reason, it reminds of how the Mavericks dealt with his arrival holding him out even after he became available to participate to allow his knee longer to heal.
Or maybe the Wizards intend on moving him in the offseason and are simply ensuring he doesn’t suffer further injury.
In the absence of the stars, Kyle Kuzma has embraced his role as the primary scoring option and led the Wizards again in their win versus Detroit with 21 points, nine rebounds, and six assists.
Deni Avdija (knee), was upgraded to probable, Vernon Carey Jr. (hip) was downgraded to doubtful and Kristaps Porzingis (knee) was downgraded to out for Friday. Bradley Beal (wrist) had season-ending surgery.
