Here’s why I’m backing the hometown team in my Hawks Magic free pick & gambling prediction for this matchup.
Hawks vs. Magic Gameday
Atlanta travels to Orlando on October 21st for an NBA matchup at the KIA Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 P.M. ET, with both teams opening their seasons looking to be a contender in the East.
Neither club has been projected to win a playoff seed, although many pundits believe they could surprise and be dark horses in the East.
After three early exits in the postseason by this Magic core the thinking is a new coach (Sean Sweeney) and improved health could equate to playoff success.
Orlando returns to the court with their core four and are looking to build upon their late season success of last year. They’ve added former Magic player Nikola Vucevic to help with rebounding and to spread the floor.
Atlanta exited in the first round of the playoffs but had arguably the most success against the reigning champions behind a hot CJ McCollum. The Hawks will look to improve defensively with the big addition of Lu Dort in the offseason.

Atlanta Hawks vs. Orlando Magic Odds & Previous Games
The Hawks finished sixth in the East last year, bowing out in the first round to the Knicks. This preseason, they were successful, accumulating a 4-1 record through five matches.
The Magic had to reach the postseason via the play-in tournament, earning the final seed, but while they pushed the Pistons in the first round, they fell in seven games.
Orlando also had a strong preseason campaign winning three of their four matches.

Hawks Stats
In the 2025-26 regular season, the Hawks ranked tied for 14th (115.0) on offense and tied for ninth on defense (112.9). Additionally, Atlanta ranked 12th in net rating (+2.2) and ran the fifth-quickest pace (102.50).
The East’s sixth seed averaged 118.5 points per game, while its opponents averaged 116.0 points. In terms of dimes and boards, Atlanta averaged 30.1 (first) and 43.5 (18th), respectively.
Playmaking is a key component of the Hawks offensive scheme as they ranked first in the association for assists per game (30.1). They’ll look to replicate that success in this campaign.
Team leaders* in key categories for Atlanta featured Jalen Johnson for scoring (22.5 points), rebounding (10.3), and assists (7.9) while Dyson Daniels was the top steal man (2.0) and Oneyeka Okongwu (1.1) for blocks.
Seven Hawks shot above the league average while the team as a whole shot 37.1%.

Magic Stats
Orlando ranked 18th (114.2) on offense and tied for 13th on defense (113.6). Additionally, the Magic were 17th in net rating (+0.6) and possessed the 14th-quickest pace (100.56).
The East’s eighth seed averaged 115.7 points per game while its opponents averaged 115.1 points. In terms of dimes and boards, Orlando averaged 26.5 (15th) and 43.4 (19th), respectively.
Orlando’s team leaders* were Paolo Banchero for scoring (22.2 points) and rebounds (8.4), Jalen Suggs for assists (5.5) and steals (1.8), and Goga Bitadze for blocks (1.0).
While the Magic only shot 34.3% from the perimeter as a team, they had four players who shot above the league average from deep.

Hawks vs. Magic Key Matchup
Jalen Johnson remains the number one option for the Hawks, although personally I find him overrated. Sure, he fills up the stat sheet, but a quick glance at the postseason showcased how easily he was shut down when the games mattered more.
The size of the Magic will be troublesome for Johnson, although he’ll likely still collect his stats.

Paolo Banchero will be the key player to watch on the Magic’s side of the court, as he led Orlando in most key categories. The question is who will guard him on the Hawks’ side since their defensive prowess is primarily in the backcourt with Dyson Daniels and Lu Dort.
Atlanta Hawks vs. Orlando Magic bottom line: A healthy Orlando Magic core is the key to their success. They’ve flirted with climbing the ladder for the past few seasons but haven’t been able to keep Banchero, Franz Wagner, and Jalen Suggs all healthy at the same time. They begin the season with the starting five all healthy and will seek to come strong out of the gate.

Hawks Magic Free Pick: Magic -2.5
Here is my Hawks Magic free pick: I’m playing Orlando to cover the -2.5 spread in a match where their moneyline is -148, and the total projected points is 235.5. Ultimately, Orlando’s size and strength will prove too much for the Hawks to withstand over 48 minutes.
A renewed emphasis is on the defense in Orlando where they slipped from second overall in 2024-25 to 13th last season.
These Southeast rivals will be vying all year to win their division, and in this opening match, one of the keys for Orlando will be to slow the Hawks in transition and cut off the passing lanes as they are one of the best playmaking teams.

Orlando Is trying Franz Wagner out as a lead creator in the pre-season and (apparently) in training camp…
Has always looked great when scaling up creation responsibilities. Excited to see Point-Franz as a main character of Magic basketball this season. https://t.co/N5HPb1NXjc
