2026 Juvenile Handicapping
- The favourite has won three of the last 10 races and hit the board four other times
- Four of the past 10 winners have been at odds of 12-1 or higher
- Trainer Todd Pletcher has won three of the last four races, twice with jockey John Velazquez
- Seven winners had won their previous start in a Grade 1 race. Four of those won the Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity, three won the American Pharoah Stakes
2026 Juvenile Handicapping: Hughes Race Odds: 1-1
Trainer Bob Baffert has won the Juvenile six times, and he holds a strong hand again with Hughes who is undefeated and unchallenged in four lifetime starts.
After breaking his maiden at first asking by 6 lengths, he’s reeled off three consecutive graded-stakes wins by open lengths. Last out he won the (G1) American Pharoah at this 1 1/16 miles distance, finishing six lengths clear of his rivals.
2026 Juvenile Handicapping: Coach Pope Race Odds: 4-1
Second last out in the (G1) Breeders’ Futurity at the track and distance, Coach Pope has a record of one win and two runner-up finishes in three lifetime starts.
Two back he looked like a monster when getting his maiden score by 12 1/2 lengths going one mile at Churchill Downs in a field of 12. He fought a long stretch duel in the Futurity after grabbing a short lead at the top of the stretch.
2026 Juvenile Handicapping: American History Race Odds: 9-2
The winner of that Breeders’ Futurity, American History was slow out of the gate and last early in the field of six before making a steady advance to engage Coach Pope and ultimately prevail by a length.
That race produced a significant increase in his speed figure from his debut, a 7 1/2 length win at Saratoga in August. Trainer Pletcher and jockey Velazquez will try to make magic happen once again.
2026 Juvenile Handicapping: Salahudin Race Odds: 6-1
The other Bob Baffert entry in the race, Salahudin’s resume nearly matches his stablemate as he’s won all three of his races, including the (G3) Iroquois Stakes racing one mile at Churchill Downs in his last start.
He’s been training lights out in prepping for this, including a five-furlong bullet work on October 13 in an eye-catching 58.40, the fastest of 21 on that day.
Here’s My 2026 Juvenile Free Pick
When all is said and done in the Juvenile we might simply see a coronation, with Hughes winning easily and emerging as the main contender for the 2027 Kentucky Derby next May. As noted above, he’s been untouchable in his races so far, and is the only horse in the field to score a triple-digit Equibase speed figure. Which he’s done twice.
That said, we’ve seen a number of heavy favourites throw up a clunker in this race and since there’s no value in betting him at even money, I’m going to take a shot and bet against. There’s a bit of a question about the horses he’s been beating up in California, with two of his races only drawing four other rivals, and the other two drawing five.
I’m going to land on the other Baffert trainee here in Salahudin. There’s lots of early speed in the race, and I think he can sit a good stalking trip and be ready to pounce as they turn for home. The added distance from his last works in his favour, and his recent workouts suggest he’s ready to fire a big effort.
- Salahudin
- Hughes
- American History
- Coach Pope
