2025 Bayakoa Stakes Handicapping
With a rare weekend off from Kentucky Derby qualifying we have to look elsewhere for graded-stakes racing action and Oaklawn Park is the place to look. Saturday the Hot Springs track will play host to the (G3) Bayakoa Stakes.
The race is open to fillies and mares age four and older, and they’ll be running 1 1/16 miles on the Oaklawn dirt track. The race has drawn a small but competitive field of six and on paper looks like nice handicapping challenge.

2025 Bayakoa Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Loved Race Odds: 9-5
The only runner in the field with a previous graded-stakes win, Loved hit that milestone last out when she won the (G3) Falls City Stakes going 1 1/8 miles over a muddy Churchill Downs track at the end of November.
She’s won exactly half of her 10 lifetime starts – with two of those over off tracks – and curiously enough finished out of the money in her five other starts. She’s not raced since the Falls City, but gets to come back here with a cutback in distance that could prove beneficial.
2025 Bayakoa Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Cornerstone Race Odds: 2-1
A back-to-back winner of her last two starts, Cornerstone just missed getting her own graded-stakes win in mid-September when she ran second in the (G2) Locust Grove Stakes at Churchill. Her most recent wins have come at Oaklawn in lower-level stakes, and she was particularly impressive when winning by four lengths in the Mistletoe Stakes on Christmas eve day.
While last out she was a winner at the track and distance, it’s notable that she’s only 1-for-11 going the 1/16 miles, with five second-or-third place finishes in those starts.
Little Jamie Race Odds: 4-1
A stakes winner last out at Tampa Bay Downs, Little Jamie is another with graded-stakes placing, having run second in the (G3) Indiana Oaks and third in the (G3) Monmouth Oaks last summer.
Her speed figures put her right there with the top two contenders here, but similar to Cornerstone she only has one win in 10 tries at the distance, with four third-place finishes.
Wild Bout Hilary Race Odds: 10-1
An interesting option at a price, Wild Bout Hilary ran the best race of her career last out in the Pogo Hop Stakes at Fair Grounds in a race that had come off the turf. She broke from the gate out front and took the field wire-to-wire to win by more than five lengths at this 1 1/16 miles distance.
While two of her five lifetime wins have been on off tracks, she’s also three-for-six over fast surfaces. It should be noted that unlike others here, most of her success has come against lower quality fields at smaller tracks.

The past performance info suggests that Loved gets the class edge in this one, having run in graded stakes in five of her last six, including the (G1) Spinster and her last out win in the Falls City. This will be her first start in more than two months, and it remains to be seen if she’ll be at the top of her game.
Given that, and some distance question with Cornerstone, I’m going to take a shot at value with Wild Bout Hilary. There’s no question she’s taking a step up in class with this field. But in her last two she’s demonstrated lots of early speed and it’s quite possible she’ll find herself loose on the lead as they turn into the stretch.
