2024 Turf Sprint Handicapping

The older horses’ version of the Juvenile Turf Sprint, the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint is open to horses age three and older, going 5 furlongs (5/8 mile) on the Del Mar grass.

First run at the Breeders’ Cup in 2008, both the Turf Sprint and the Juvenile Turf Sprint are unique as they are the only BC races that can change distance, from 5 furlongs to 5 1/2 furlongs depending on the track configuration where the races are being run.

One of the most lucrative betting races in the Breeders’ Cup, in eight of the past 10 years the winner has been at odds of 7-1 or higher, with six of those winners in double-digit odds, and only one favourite winner in that span.

2024 Turf Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Cogburn Race Odds: 7-5

One of the lowest morning line favourites in all of the 2024 Breeders’ Cup races, Cogburn has simply been blowing away his competition, with three consecutive wins by 2 1/4, 3 1/2 and 3 1/4 lengths, respectively. In 5 1/2 and 6 furlong turf sprints, those are huge margins.

Here he’ll be cutting back to five furlongs, a distance where he is 2-for-2 lifetime.

2024 Turf Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Bradsell Race Odds: 3-1

UK-bred runner Bradsell has been consistent at the Group 1 level on his home soil, with two wins and a narrow defeat in three straight starts at the highest level of British racing.

While he might be a bit better on softer ground, the first of those three wins came on turf rated as good-fast, so the Del Mar track may not be much of a problem for him. He has four wins in seven starts at the distance.

Motorius Race Odds: 8-1

Another UK bred, Motorious is actually California based for the past two years and is a perfect 3-for-3 on the Del Mar turf course. All three of those wins have come at this five furlong distance.

He was fifth in this race last year, but beaten only by 1 1/2 lengths after a troubled trip.

Big Evs Race Odds: 12-1

The winner of last year’s BC Juvenile Turf Sprint, UK-based Big Evs has been a bit inconsistent since then, and last time out in a Group 1 race at York he was no match for Bradsell and two others that will be entered here.

At the same time, all of these five furlong races in the UK are run on a straight course, and his win last year proves that he’s one that can at last handle a turn in the course.

As noted above, all of Cogburn’s wins this year have been visually impressive, and until someone steps up and beats him, he’s hard to bet against here.

So while I think he’ll win, it’s also noted that recent history hasn’t been kind to favourites in this race. With that in mind, I’ll box him in an exacta with Motorious.
