2024 Turf Handicapping
The longest race of the Breeders’ Cup weekend, the 1 1/2 mile turf is open to horses age three and older. The Turf always draws the most international field of all the Breeders’ Cup races, and this year is no exception.
Nine of the 13 entries are shipping in from overseas, including 5 from Great Britain or Ireland, two from Japan, one from France and one from Argentina. European based horses have dominated the turf over recent years, winning eight of the last 10 races.
The Turf is one race on Breeders’ Cup weekend where you can perhaps find some value, as the favourite has only won three times the past 10 years, while running second three other occasions.

2024 Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: Rebel’s Romance Race Odds: 5-2
The winner of this race two years ago, Rebel’s Romance hasn’t seemed to have lost a step in the time since, and this year he’s won 4-of-5, all at this 1 1/2 miles distance, at four different tracks in four different countries, and with two of those being at the Group 1 level.
One odd quirk about him is that he’s an all-or-nothing horse. In 21 lifetime starts he’s won 14. But in the seven he didn’t win, he ran third once, and was off the board in all of the other six.
2024 Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: Jayarabe Race Odds: 4-1
A three-year-old French bred, Jayarabe stepped up last out to take on older horses and scored a narrow win in a Group 2 event in France going 1 3/16 miles over soft ground. That was his fifth win in seven lifetime starts and third in five this year.
He has yet to win at the Group 1 level, however, and this is 3/16th of a mile further than he has ever raced before.
Far Bridge Race Odds: 6-1
The best US hope, Far Bridge seems to be peaking at just the right time, and comes into this on a two-race win streak, both of those coming at this distance and against Grade 1 company.
He has good tactical speed, and although two back he took the field wire-to-wire, he’s usually sitting mid-pack just off the pace early and then comes rolling home late.
Shahrayr Race Odds: 10-1
Third by just 1 1/4 lengths in this race last year, two back Shahrayr took on Rebels Romance in a Grade 1 event the UAE and ran second, beaten by two lengths.
He doesn’t win a lot – just 4 times in 16 lifetime starts – but he’s 2-2-2 in seven starts at 1 1/2 miles, and in this race being able to handle the distance is half the battle.

European-bred horse have dominated this race over the last decade, winning eight of the past 10. Beyond that, non-US based horse have claimed 21 of the 30 top-three spots in those races.
On back class, Rebel’s Romance is the one to beat, but to get a bit of value I’m hoping Far Bridge can turn the tables this year, and he’ll be my pick to win.
He looks to be coming into this in top form, and his mid-pack racing style and strong finishing kick is perfect profile fit for the usual winner of this race.
