2024 Sprint Handicapping

An original race on the Breeders’ Cup schedule from 1984, the Breeders’ Cup Sprint is open to horses age three and older, running six furlongs on the Del Mar dirt track.

For 2024, the Sprint has drawn a solid field of 11 starters, with no fewer than eight of those coming into the race off a previous win.

The Sprint has produced two low-priced repeat winners in the past 10 years, but only two favourites have won in that span, with three others in double-digit odds. On the other hand, winning odds in the other five races have been between 2-1 and 6-1, with only one runner-up higher than 7-1.

In other words, historically the Sprint is not the place to look for a big bomb to either win or fill out the exacta.

2024 Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Federal Judge Race Odds: 3-1

A lightly raced four-year-old colt, Federal Judge has only started six times in his career, but has only finished off the board once, with four wins and one runner-up effort in that span.

His first two starts in 2024 were at the allowance level and he won the second of those by six lengths going wire-to-wire. He then stepped up to the (G2) Phoenix Stakes at Keeneland, where he again ran away form the field, winning by more than five lengths.

2024 Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Mullikin Race Odds: 7-2

The ultra-consistent Mullikin has won all four of his races in 2024 by a combined 15 1/2 lengths, and has been first or second in eight of his nine career starts.

He comes in to this off a dominating 5 3/4 length win in the (G1) Forego Stakes at Keeneland, after taking the (G2) John Nerud Stakes at Aqueduct in a finishing time that was just a half-second off a track record.

Straight No Chaser Race Odds: 5-1

California-based Straight No Chaser comes in off his own dominating win in the (G2) Santa Anita Sprint Championship, where he led from the gate and was was more than six lengths clear of the field at the wire.

He has three wins in five lifetime starts at the distance, and five wins in nine tries overall.

Raging Torrent Race Odds: 10-1

Riding a three-race win streak, Raging Torrent was last seen battling back on a multiple graded stakes winner to take the (G2) Pat O’Brien Stakes going seven furlongs at Del Mar.

Prior to that he had a pair of wins at Churchill Down, and in both cases the third-place finisher came back to win his next start. It should be noted that he’s 0-2 at the six furlong distance, although one of those was on turf.

Speed, speed and more speed is the name of the game here, with at least five of these being the types of runners that want to go straight to the front.

Typically that would suggest looking for a closer, but the problem with that is none of the non front-runners have the back class that would suggest they will be able to pass all five.

Of the speed horses, I think Mullikin has the best chance of rating just off the pace and being in the best position to take command in the stretch. So I’m not going to over think it, I’ll take him for the win and try to find better value in other races.
