2024 Juvenile Handicapping

The fourth race on the Friday Breeders’ Cup card, the Juvenile has been run every year since 1984. The race is open to horses age two, and covers 1 1/16 miles on the Del Mar dirt.

While the winner of the Juvenile is often tabbed as an early contender for next spring’s Kentucky Derby, so far only two horses have turned the double, with Street Sense winning the 2006 Juvenile and 2007 Derby, and Nyquist taking both races in 2015 and 2016.

Horses trained by Todd Pletcher have won the Juvenile the past two years in a row. Last year Fierceness won at odds of 15-1, but was well-beaten as the 2024 Derby favourite. He’s considered one of the top contenders for this year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic.

2024 Juvenile Free Pick & Handicapping: East Avenue Race Odds: 5-2

East Avenue proved much the best so far in his two career starts, breaking his maiden by eight lengths at first asking and then stepping up to take the (G1) Breeder’s Futurity at Keeneland by 5 1/4 lengths over a rival he’ll meet again here.

Not only did he win those two races by open lengths, in both cases he took the field wire-to-wire. In other words he’s yet to be tested, although here he’s going to meet several others with lots of early speed.

2024 Juvenile Free Pick & Handicapping: Chancer McPatrick Race Odds: 3-1

Undefeated in three lifetime starts, Chancer McPatrick is the exact opposite of East Avenue in that all his wins have come while rallying from far off the pace. In his case that includes a pair of Grade 1 wins, having reached the winner’s circle in the hopeful at Saratoga and the Champagne Stakes at Aqueduct.

He’ll get lots of speed to chase, plus an extra 1/16th of a mile to work with.

Jonathan’s Way Race Odds: 9-2

Also unbeaten in two career starts, Jonathan’s Way has shown some versatility, coming from off the pace to win his maiden debut at Saratoga and then leading all the way in the (G3) Iroquois Stakes at Churchill Downs.

Trainer Philip Bauer looks for his first Breeders’ Cup win, while jockey Joel Rosario has 15.

Gaming Race Odds: 8-1

Gaming is flying a bit under the radar coming into the Juvenile, despite the fact he’s also undefeated two lifetime starts, and both of those wins have come at this Del Mar track.

He was a gate-to-wire winner in his first start and then took advantage of a good stalking trip to win the (G1) Del Mar Futurity by 1 1/3 lengths. That race was only 7 furlongs, so he’ll have to show he can handle the stretch out in distance.

Sire Game Winner won this race in 2018.

Here’s My 2024 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Free Pick.

This could prove to be one of the most competitive races of the Breeders’ Cup weekend, as shown by how many of these are coming into the race undefeated in their young careers.

As noted above, the top two favourites have completely different running styles, and given that it’s very likely the pace could heat up, that might play into the hands of the closer, Chancer McPatrick.

Having said that, East Avenue has been completely dominant in victory, and it could just be he’s head-and-shoulders above his peers right now, talent-wise.

I’m going to bet that way and take him for the win, but I’m going to try to find value in using Gaming in the exacta.
