2024 Juvenile Fillies Turf Handicapping
The third race on the opening day of the 2024 Breeders’ Cup World Championships, the Juvenile Fillies Turf was added to the Breeders’ Cup schedule in 2008. The race is open to fillies age two, and they run one mile on the Del Mar turf course.
At odds of 9-1, Hard To Justify took the race last year, while the second favourite and favourite rounded out the Place and Show spots.
Chad Brown was the winning trainer last year, his fifth win in the race in the past 10 years, and sixth overall.

2024 Juvenile Fillies Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: Lake Victoria Race Odds: 8-5
Although European bred-or-based fillies haven’t had the same great success in this race as some of the other turf races on the Breeders’ Cup lineup, Irish trainer Aiden O’Brien has won 18 Breeders’ Cup races. He took this one in 2022, and here he holds a strong hand again with Lake Victoria, who is undefeated in her four-race career in the UK and Ireland.
Not only has she won every time out, the last two of those were fairly easy at the Group 1 level, and she’ll actually be getting a six-pound break in the weight she’s carried in all her previous races.
2024 Juvenile Fillies Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: Thought Process Race Odds: 5-2
The hometown hope, Thought Process has won her last three in a row, with the first two of those at this one-mile distance on the Del Mar turf.
Last out she took the field wire-to-wire in the (G3) Surfer Girl Stakes at Santa Anita, winning by four lengths in a final time that came back very fast for the mile distance.
Scythian Race Odds: 12-1
Similar to Thought Process, Scythian took a big step forward moving from dirt in her first start to turf for her last two, winning both at this 1 1/16 miles distance.
Most recently she was a 2 1/2 length winner of the (G2) Miss Grillo Stakes at Aqueduct, a race that has proven to be a fairly significant prep for the Juvenile Fillies Turf in the past.
Kilwin Race Odds: 20-1
Kilwin only has two races in her career, but she has won them both. This includes a first-out maiden victory at Ellis Park, in a race where both the second and third-place finishers came back to win their next start.
Most recently she won a minor stake at Kentucky Downs, where she again topped a third-place finisher that won her next start.

Wins at the track and distance are always key handicapping angles, and in that regard Thought Process looms large here.
At the same time, winning against tough competition is also key, and there I have to give Lake Victoria the edge based on her impressive pair of Group 1 wins across the pond. I do have some concerns as to how she’ll handle the footing at Del Mar, but think she stands out from a class standpoint and that will carry her to the win.
