2024 Filly & Mare Turf Handicapping
A tough 1 3/8 miles test on the grass for female horses age three and older, the Filly & Mare Turf is another turf race on the Breeders’ Cup card that has recently been very lucrative for horses from outside of North America.
In fact, fillies and mares bred-or-based in Europe or Japan have won the race the past eight years in a row, with only one of those having made her mark primarily racing in the US.
Last year Inspiral became the first post-time favourite to win the race in the past 10 years, while there have been four winners in double-digit odds in that span. It’s notable that three favourites were the runner-up, and there has only been one second-place finisher at odds of more than 6-1.
Odds listed here are provided by the Del Mar track oddsmaker.
2024 Filly & Mare Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: War Like Goddess Race Odds: 5-2
Classy seven-year-old mare War Like Goddess makes her eighth start at a distance where she has never been out of the money, with four wins, two seconds and a third in those races.
Last out she took on males in the (G1) Turf Classic at 1 1/2 miles, where she rallied to get the lead in deep stretch, then just couldn’t quite hold off Far Bridge to be beaten by just a half-length. Now she gets a slight cutback in distance and gets back running against her own gender.
2024 Filly & Mare Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: Cinderella’s Dream Race Odds: 4-1
UK-bred filly Cinderella’s Dream came over to the US in mid-summer and ran two very good races, picking up the wins in the (G1) Belmont Oaks Invitational and the (G2) Saratoga Oaks Invitational. Both of those were at 1 3/16 miles, and in the latter the second-place finisher came back to win next out.
She in top form and won’t have a problem with the footing at Del Mar. She’s won 6-of-7 lifetime, here she tackles more distance than ever and faces older mares for the first time.
Moira Race Odds: 8-1
Moira closed a lot of ground late in the (G1) EP Taylor at Woodbine last out, but couldn’t quite get to Full Count Felicia who at one point opened up a 19-length (!) lead on the field. Ultimately Moira had to settle for second, beaten 3 1/2 lengths in that 1 1/4 mile race.
Prior to that she had won the (G2) Beverly D over 1 3/16 miles. She was third in this race last year, 1 1/4 lengths behind the winner.
Full Count Felicia Race Odds: 12-1
Speedy five-year-old Full Count Felicia won the EP Taylor by going to the front, widening, widening and widening, and then hanging on in the stretch.
She likely won’t get away with the same trip here, but as the only real speed on paper, she will be on the front again, and if the others aren’t careful, she could get away under a very crafty rider. She may not win against this level of talent, but could very well hang on for a piece.
Here’s My 2024 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf Free Pick.
This is very tough handicapping race, in that you could make a case for several, while at the same time asking questions about all of them.
I really wanted to like Content – who is not even listed above – but for the fact she’s shipping over from the UK and making her third start in less than a month after two long and tough Group 1 races in France and England. That seems like a big ask.
I fully respect the accomplishments of War Like Goddess and she’s sure to be in the mix, but to me she just doesn’t win enough to take her at a short price. Moira sits the same pattern, although she does offer some value.
So I’m going to land on Cinderella’s Dream for the win, although even there I wonder how she’ll fair against older. I’m less concerned about distance. I like her form in her two US races and I think the pace setup suits.
