2024 Distaff Handicapping

The feature race for female horses running on the dirt, the Distaff (at one time known as the Ladies Classic), is open to fillies and mares age three and older, running 1 1/8 miles.

The race has drawn a field of 10, including one heavy favourite that has already stamped herself as a superstar among her peers, as well as a couple of dangerous looking foreign invaders.

Over the past 10 years, the favourite has won the Distaff four times and finished second on two other occasions. There has only been one double-digit bomb to win in that time, although the runner-up in the last four races has average odds of 15-1.

2024 Distaff Free Pick & Handicapping: Thorpedo Anna Race Odds: 4-5

The shortest price in the morning line of all the Breeders’ Cup favourites, Thorpedo Anna crushed the three-year-old filly competition over the summer, and then stepped up to beat all but one of the boys in the Grade 1 Travers Stakes.

That race was at 1 1/4 miles, now she gets back to a distance where she is a perfect 3-for-3.

Now back against her own gender, this seems like her race to lose. If you want to look for a reason to try and beat her, you could consider that her last two races were very tough and might have taken a bit out of her, after what has been a long campaign. She’s also never faced older horses, as she will here.

2024 Distaff Free Pick & Handicapping: Raging Sea Race Odds: 7-2

A winner of three straight and 4-of-5 on the year, Raging Sea has been particularly good at this 1 1/8 mile distance, with five wins and one second-place finish in seven starts.

She’s very good at rating off the pace, and so if the favourite gets caught up in some kind of suicidal pace scenario, she could be in a good spot to reel her in in the stretch.

Awesome Result Race Odds: 4-1

Japanese import Awesome Result is a daughter of US Triple Crown winner Justify, and is undefeated in Japan in seven lifetime starts going back to 2022. In the first five of those she won against males.

Since her first three starts at this distance, she’s been going longer, and most recently won by five lengths going 1 1/4 miles over a rival that came back to win her next start. If her record is a true indication of her talent, she could be very dangerous on the cutback.

Candied Race Odds: 15-1

The third-place finisher by just 3/4 of a length in the BC Juvenile Fillies last year, Candied only has one win since then and has been just a cut below the best fillies and mares on dirt this season.

That being said, she hasn’t shied away from the top competition either, with four of her five starts since the BC at the Grade 1 level. She didn’t win any of those races, but she is her best coming from off the pace and could get up for a piece at the end.

As mentioned above, this is Thorpedo Anna’s race to lose, and when you consider the horse she almost beat in the Travers is the 3-1 second ML choice in the BC Classic, she’d probably be no worse than 3rd choice if she were to run there against the boys.

She’s the pick to win, although I won’t bet her to win, and rather use her on top of Candied in an exacta and both that one and Awesome Result in a trifecta.
