2020 Withers Stakes Handicapping

A compact field of eight are expected to go to the gate for the 2020 Withers Stakes on Saturday, but it’s a competitive group with five of those under 10-1 in Bovada’s odds. Following up on the Jerome Stakes and Remsen Stakes, the Withers is the third of five Kentucky Derby qualifying races at Aqueduct. On Saturday they’ll run 1 1/8 miles, with Derby qualifying points to the top four finishers on a 10-4-2-1 scale.

2020 Withers Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Shotski Race Odds: 9-4

The winner of the aforementioned Remsen at Aqueduct in early December, Shotski has had a somewhat erratic start to his early career. After finishing well up the track in his career debut on the turf at Kentucky Downs in September, he then won his next start on dirt. He was well-beaten in his next try at the lower stakes level, and then took the field wire-to-wire to win the Remsen. One positive handicapping angle for him is that his speed figures have improved every time out.

He’s trained by Jeremiah O’Dwyer, Luis Saez is the jockey.

2020 Withers Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Portos Race Odds: 7-2

Speaking of improving every time out, Portos went from fourth to third to second to first over his four lifetime starts, blowing away the field on the Aqueduct dirt last out by more than ten lengths. Given the fact the split times and finish of that race came back very slow on a sloppy-sealed track, you have to really question the quality of the field he was facing. At the same time, that win came over the Aqueduct track and at Saturday’s 1 1/8 miles distance, and he’s the only colt in the field that can make that claim.

2020 Withers Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Max Player Race Odds: 7-1

Max Player took a big step forward in his second lifetime start to come from off the pace on a sloppy track at Parx Racing in Pennsylvania last out to score his first win. He had to come four-wide off the turn and duel for the lead at the top of the stretch before pulling clear to hit the wire 4 1/4 lengths in front. Prior to that he ran second in his career debut.

He’s trained by Linda Rice, Dylan Davis will be in the irons.

2020 Withers Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Monday Morning QB Race Odds: 5-1

Maryland-bred Monday Morning QB is the only horse in the race to top a 100 Equibase speed figure and he did it twice, back-to-back in his last two races, including winning the restricted Heft Stakes at Parx Racing. He’s taking a step up in class here and is stretching out over seven furlongs for the first time, but expect he’ll go to the front and try to take them as far as he can.

I think all of the top favourites are vulnerable in this spot, so I’m going to take a price and bet Max Player to both Win and Place. I liked the fact he was able to rate off the pace in his last start and go on to win, and the fact the horse he beat there has come back to win his next start. I’ll also bet the exacta box with Monday Morning QB, with both Shotski and Portos in the bottom spot in the trifecta.
