2020 Shoemaker Mile Handicapping
Open for spectator-free racing as of last weekend, Santa Anita hosts a big Memorial Day Monday race card with a trio of graded-stakes including the (G1) Shoemaker Mile.
So far one of the big events not yet affected by the Covid-19 upheaval in sports is the 2020 Breeders’ Cup World Championships, set to be run on November 6-7 at Keeneland Race Course, and the Shoemaker kicks off the schedule of ‘Win and You’re In’ races for the BC, meaning the Shoemaker winner grabs an automatic berth in the BC Mile.
The Shoemaker Mile has drawn a solid field of 11, racing a flat mile on the Santa Anita turf course.

2020 Shoemaker Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Raging Bull Race Odds: 7-2
A classy French-bred colt that has spent his entire career racing in the US, Raging Bull has put just under $1 million in the bank in 12 lifetime starts, the last six of those at the Grade 1 level. The concern might be that he failed to pick up a win in five starts in 2019 and he’s been off since running third in the (G1) Woodbine Mile last September.
He’s also a certified closer, and one mile may just be a bit shorter of a race than he really needs.
He’s trained by Chad Brown, while Joel Rosario picks up the mount.
2020 Shoemaker Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: River Boyne Race Odds: 4-1
One of the few in the field with significant races under his saddle in 2020, River Boyne comes into this on a two-race win streak, having last out captured the (G1) Frank Kilroe Mile after picking up a win in the (G3) Thunder Road Stakes.
Significantly, both of those wins came at one mile on the SA turf course and he was second in this race last year.
Trained by Jeff Mullins, Abel Cedillo will be in the saddle.
2020 Shoemaker Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Neptune’s Storm Race Odds: 15-1
Although lacking some of the back class of other big names in here, all Neptune’s Storm does is get in the money, having finished in the top three in six consecutive graded-stakes races in 2019, including a win in the (G2) Hill Prince Stakes at Belmont Park.
Last out he ran third in the (G2) Mathis Brothers Mile Stakes at Santa Anita to close out his three-year-old season. Now he steps up against older horses for the first time.
Richard Baltas is the trainer, up-and-coming Umberto Rispoli is the jock.
2020 Shoemaker Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: War Of Will Race Odds: 4-1
The 2019 Preakness Stakes winner War Of Will goes back to the turf where he started his career in 2018 before the connections decided to switch him to dirt for 2019 to get him on the Triple Crown trail. It’s not a bad move, given that he’s shown little on the dirt since his Preakness win, and he has a strong turf pedigree.
At the same time, he failed to score a win in his four turf starts, including running fifth in the (G1) Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf in 2018.
He’s trained by Mark Casse, Flavien Prat is tabbed to ride.
Here’s my 2020 Shoemaker Mile Free Pick.
In a very tough handicapping race I’m going to go with the hot hand and take River Boyne for the Win. He’ll have to overcome the outside post, but there doesn’t seem to be a lot of speed in the race, and with a decent break he should be able to get good position early. He also seems to be the horse for the course.
I think Neptune’s Storm could surprise at big odds, and I’ll use him in the exacta.
