2020 Rebel Stakes Handicapping
It has been a crazy week in sports, and perhaps especially so in horse racing with the news breaking Monday that the FBI had arrested a couple dozen people as part of a doping ring. This includes trainers Jorge Navarro and Jason Servis, who up until then was trainer of superstar Maximum Security.
Elsewhere, all kinds of sport events and leagues have been suspended or cancelled due to the COVID-19 virus, but racing goes on, at least for now. The big Kentucky Derby qualifying race this Saturday is the (G2) Rebel Stakes from Oaklawn where the race will be run without spectators.
Eight runners have been entered to try run 1 1/16 miles in the dirt, chasing Derby points on a 50-20-10-5 scale to the top four finishers.

2020 Rebel Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Nadal Race Odds: 1-1
Lightly raced and undefeated, Nadal broke his maiden first time out in early January and then stepped right into graded-stakes racing and won the (G2) San Vincente Stakes. Both of those races were at Santa Anita and run at 6 1/2 and 7 furlongs, respectively. He’ll try to keep the win streak going after travelling for the first time and stretching out in distance.
Bob Baffert trains, and Joel Rosario gets the call to ride.
2020 Rebel Stakes Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Basin Race Odds: 7-2
Very similar to Nadal, Basin is a lightly raced colt but already a graded-stakes winner, having won the (G1) Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga last September. Prior to that he had scored his maiden win in his second lifetime start. Also like Nadal he’ll be stretching out past seven furlongs and running a two-turn race for the first time in his career. He’s also going to have to overcome any rust that may have accumulated from not having raced for more than six months.
Steve Asmussen is the trainer, Javier Castellano will be in the saddle.
2020 Rebel Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Silver Prospector Race Odds: 11-2
A comparative veteran with eight starts to his name, Silver Prospector comes into the Rebel off a win at the track and at the distance when last out he won the (G3) Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn after stalking a quick early pace and and taking over at the top of the stretch. Two starts back he also won at 1 1/16 miles when the took the (G2) Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes on a sloppy track at Churchill Downs.
He’s another Steve Asmussen trainee, with Ricardo Santana Jr. getting the mount.
2020 Rebel Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: No Parole Race Odds: 8-1
Although he has been protected by only racing against other Louisiana-breds in his short career, the fact No Parole blew away the competition in all three of those races to go so far undefeated can’t be ignored. The last time out he won at one mile, so an extra 16th shouldn’t be too big of a stretch. Expect they’ll send him to the lead and ask him to take them as far as he can.

There is a lot of hype over Nadal, and he may prove to be worth it. But at even money I’m going to try and beat him. I also have questions about Basin’s ability to get the distance, especially after the long layoff, so I’ll be betting Silver Prospector for the win. I liked this horse prior to the Smarty Jones Stakes back in January, and although he was fourth on that day, I also liked the bounce-back effort last out in winning the Southwest.
