2020 Pegasus World Cup Turf Stakes Handicapping
Of the two big Pegasus World Cup races to be run on Saturday at Gulfstream, the Turf Invitational is shaping up to be the better betting race with a wide-open field and no heavy favourite. The race has drawn a full field of 12 runners, and they’ll be racing 1 3/16 miles on the grass.
Odds listed here are morning line odds from the Gulfstream track handicapper.
2020 Pegasus Turf Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Magic Wand Race Odds: 7-2
The only mare in the field, Magic Wand is also the slight pre-race favourite. Second in this race last year, Magic Wand has spent most of her career competing at the very highest levels all over the world. Two starts back she won a Grade 1 event in Australia, but the problem is that she is often the bridesmaid, having won only three times in 22 lifetime starts, but running second eight times.
Aiden O’Brien is the trainer, Ryan Moore gets the call to ride.
2020 Pegasus Turf Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Without Parole Race Odds: 4-1
Very similar to Magic Wand, Without Parole is a horse that has been racing in very top company in Europe but not getting the results, finishing out of the money in five straight races before shipping to the US and running third in the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Mile. He’s taking a class drop here, and the added distance should be to his benefit.
He’s trained by Chad Brown, and the legendary Frankie Detorri will be in the saddle.
2020 Pegasus Turf Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Mo Forza Race Odds: 5-1
It took Mo Forza six races to get his first lifetime win – although he was in the money in four of his first five – but since then he’s been on fire and comes into this on a four-race winning streak. Two back he won the (G1) Hollywood Derby and last out he took the (G2) Mathis Brothers Mile coming from way off the pace. This will be his first start outside of California.
Peter Miller is the trainer, Joel Rosario is in the irons.
2020 Pegasus Turf Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Sacred Life Race Odds: 12-1
The only French-bred horse in the field, Sacred Life has made his last four starts in the US. He’s another that runs second a lot, as he’s been the runner-up in six of his last eight starts. His only win in that span has come at the allowance level, but in two of the other four he lost by just a half-length and a nose at shorter distances than they’ll be going on Saturday.
Another Chad Brown trainee, Jose Ortiz is the rider.
Here’s my 2020 Pegasus World Cup Turf Stakes Free Pick.
On paper, the field for this race seems to include a lot of horses on the backside of their career, and a lot of other horses that just come up short time and again. So I’ll go in the other direction and take a younger horse that has been on a roll and bet Mo Forza for the win – although I’m a bit concerned with the distance. I’ll also box him with Magic Wand and Sacred Life in the exacta.
