2020 Met Mile Handicapping
The first of a pair of Grade 1 stakes races set for Saturday at Belmont Park, the Met Mile is open to horses aged three and older, tasked to run a one-turn mile on the Belmont dirt track.
The race has drawn a solid field of eight starters that includes several previous Grade 1 stakes winners and is a ‘Win And You’re In’ qualifier for the 2020 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, scheduled for Saturday, November 7 at Keeneland Race Course.
Odds listed here are provided by Bovada’s racebook.
2020 Met Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: McKinzie Race Odds: 6-4
A three-time Grade 1 stakes winner and runner-up in this race last year, McKinzie also grabbed the place money in the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Classic. He kicked off 2020 with a rare up-the-track finish in the $20 million Saudi Cup, but came back from that effort to take the (G2) Triple Bend Stakes at Santa Anita.
He’s been first or second in 14 of 16 lifetime starts.
Hall of Famer Bob Baffert is the trainer, regular rider Mike Smith is in the saddle.
2020 Met Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Vekoma Race Odds: 9-4
Lightly raced four-year-old Vekoma comes into the Met Mile on a two-race win streak, having last out scored an impressive 7 1/4 length win in the (G1) Carter Handicap going seven furlongs on the Belmont dirt.
Prior to that he was an relatively easy winner of the Sir Shackleton Stakes at Gulfstream Park in his first start after a long layoff following a 12th place effort in the 2019 Kentucky Derby.
Gary Weaver is the trainer, Javier Castellano will be in the irons.
2020 Met Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Code Of Honor Race Odds: 4-1
The runner-up in the 2019 Kentucky Derby, Code Of Honor followed up on that effort by reeling off three straight wins that included the (G1) Travers Stakes and (G1) Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park.
He closed out 2019 with a somewhat disappointing seventh place run in the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Classic, but made his 2020 debut a winning one in the (G3) Westchester Stakes at Belmont. He may want a bit more distance than he’s getting here.
He’s trained by Shug McGaughey, while John Velazquez is tapped to ride.
2020 Met Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Warrior’s Charge Race Odds: 12-1
Speedy Florida-bred Warrior’s Charge took awhile to score his maiden win and lacks the graded-stakes resume of many of the others in the race, but did score a win in the (G3) Razorback Handicap and ran second in the (G2) Oaklawn Handicap so far this year.
As a front running colt he drew a tough outside post here, so watch for the jock to hustle him from the gate and try to play catch-me-if-you-can.
He’s a Brad Cox trainee, Florent Geroux will ride.
Here’s my 2020 Met Mile Handicap Free Pick.
While the race features a field of very good horses, there’s not a ton of early speed and sets up as a real tactical race for the jockeys where early position will be key.
McKinzie looms large, but I really liked Vekoma’s run in the Carter in a very good field and with only seven career starts to his name he seems like a horse that still has a lot of upside.
I’ll play him for the win and key him on top of the exacta with McKinzie and Warrior’s Charge underneath.
