2020 Manhattan Stakes Handicapping
The second Grade 1 stakes on Saturday’s Belmont Park card, the Manhattan Stakes is for horses aged four and older, and run at 1 1/4 miles on the Belmont turf course.
A bit of a handicapping challenge, the Manhattan has drawn a field of eight runners that are loaded with big-race experience but not an overwhelming number of wins and none that are coming into the race on what could be considered a hot streak.

2020 Manhattan Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Instilled Regard Race Odds: 2-1
The fourth-place finisher in the 2018 Kentucky Derby, Instilled Regard made his first 12 lifetime starts on the dirt before being switched to turf racing late in 2019.
The move has provided mixed results, with a pair of wins and a pair of third-place finishes in five races on the grass. He was a last-out winner in the (G2) Fort Marcy Stakes after a somewhat dull effort prior to that in the (G2) Muniz Memorial where he was sixth as the favourite.
He’s one of three in the race trained by Chad Brown. Irad Ortiz Jr. – who rode five winners on last Saturday’s Belmont card – is the jockey.
2020 Manhattan Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Sadler’s Joy Race Odds: 4-1
A veteran of 29 starts with 20 in-the-money finishes, Sadler’s Joy has had a slow start to 2020, failing to find the winner’s circle in three races so far this year. Last out he was third in the Tiller Stakes at Belmont Park as the favourite.
While he has seven top-three finishes in his last nine races, he only has one win in that span, a fairly consistent pattern throughout his career.

2020 Manhattan Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Devamani Race Odds: 9-2
A French-bred colt that has been running in the US since 2018, Devamani has spent most of his career racing in the allowance-level ranks, only stepping up to graded-stakes racing this year.
He’s had some success with it, scoring back-to-back runner-up finishes in the (G2) Fort Marcy, where he was beaten just a neck by Instilled Regard, after losing by a nose in the (G3) Tampa Bay Stakes.
He’s another Chad Brown trainee, Joel Rosario will be in the saddle.
2020 Manhattan Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Dot Matrix Race Odds: 8-1
Seven-year-old NY-bred Dot Matrix has had most of his success at the lower stakes level, but opened his 2020 season with a win in the (G3) John Connolly Turf Cup Stakes. He comes into this off a second-place finish in the Tiller Stakes where he was two lengths in front of Sadler’s Joy and was beaten just a head by a 38-1 wire-to-wire winner.
Brad Cox trains, Florent Geroux is the jockey.

Although Instilled Regard seems to have found new life as a turf runner, like most of the others in here he’s been very inconsistent over his career and at low odds I’m going to try and beat him.
I think the race sets up for something of an upset and with that in mind I’m gong to play Dot Matrix for both the win and place. I can toss his result from two starts back where he broke very slow and lost all chance and instead focus on the fact outside of that one he’s reeled off six triple-digit Equibase speed figures.
I’ll box him in the exacta with Devamani and play a second straight exacta with each of those on top of Instilled Regard.
