2020 Haskell Stakes Handicapping
Despite the fact an outbreak of the Covid-19 virus among jockeys in southern California this past week has forced the shut down of racing at Del Mar, the show goes on with a number of big races Saturday on the East Coast, including the $1 million Haskell Stakes.
Open to three-year-old horses, the race serves as a ‘Win And You’re In’ event for the 2020 Breeders’ Cup Classic, to be held November 7 at Keeneland Race Course. The Haskell has drawn a field of seven to race 1 1/8 miles on the dirt.

2020 Haskell Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Authentic Race Odds: 4-5
One of the current favourites for September’s 2020 Kentucky Derby, Authentic has won three of his four career starts, a number that includes a pair of graded-stakes wins, and last out, a runner-up effort in the (G1) Santa Anita Derby.
His record makes him the favourite, but there is some question over the fact that since winning the (G3) Sham Stakes in early January with a 113 Equibase speed figure, his speed ratings have actually been trending down in his last two races, and he was beaten by open lengths in the SA Derby by a horse he had already defeated once before.
He’s trained by Bob Baffert, Mike Smith will get the ride.
2020 Haskell Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Dr. Post Race Odds: 2-1
Breaking from the #1 gate position just inside of Authentic, Dr. Post sports a similar record with a pair of wins and a second-place finish in four races, although unlike that one only his last race was at the graded-stakes level, when he ran second to the very tough Tiz The Law last month in the (G1) Belmont Stakes.
He seems to be an improving colt, with his last-out speed rating of 107 the best of his career so far. He’s an off-the-pace runner who should be coming late as they make their way through the stretch drive.
The trainer is Todd Pletcher, Joe Bravo is the jock.
2020 Haskell Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: NY Traffic Race Odds: 11-2
The veteran in the field with eight starts already in his young career, NY Traffic has run some very good races lately without finding the winner’s circle. Last out he was beaten just a length in the (G3) Matt Winn Stakes by the highly regarded Maxfield, and prior to that he was also second behind a wire-to-wire winner in the (G2) Louisiana Derby.
He lacks the overall speed of the top two in here, but like Dr. Post his numbers are moving in the right direction.
Saffie Joseph Jr. trains, Paco Lopez will be in the irons.
2020 Haskell Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Lebda Race Odds: 50-1
After the top three there’s not a whole lot of class in the rest of this field, and that’s reflected in the odds. Lebda at least sports a pair of lower-level stakes wins to his name, although he was well beaten a month ago in the (G3) Ohio Derby despite battling on the lead through 3/4 of a mile.
He does have some early speed, so expect that he’ll try to get to the front from the gate and hang on for a piece.
The trainer is Claudio Gonzalez, Alex Cintron is tapped to ride.

You can’t sugar coat it, this is pretty weak field for a $1 million, Grade 1 race. And simply put, I don’t like the way Authentic is trending and can’t bet him at such low odds. That being the case, I’ll play Dr. Post for the win, and put him in the exacta with NY Traffic.
