2020 Gamely Stakes Handicapping
Te second of two Grade 1 stakes on Monday’s holiday race card at Santa Anita, the Gamely is also the first Grade 1 turf stakes for fillies and mares in this very strange racing season.
The race has drawn a very competitive and international field of 11 fillies and mares aged three and up, and they’ll be racing 1 1/8 miles on the Santa Anita turf course.

2020 Gamely Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Etoil Race Odds: 5-2
French-bred filly Etoil will be making her first career start outside of her native country in a campaign that is likely pointed at the Breeders’ Cup World Championships in November.
She raced seven times last season, winning three of her first four starts, but after that she stepped up to top-level Group 1 and 2 races where she failed to hit the board in three tries.
She’s trained by Chad Brown, Joel Rosario will be in the irons.
2020 Gamely Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Ollie’s Candy Race Odds: 4-1
A talented five-year-old mare, Ollie’s Candy ran seventh in this race last year and then hit the board in five of her next six starts, all in graded-stakes, including picking up a win in the (G1) Clement Hirsch Stakes.
Last out she ran second in the (G1) Apple Blossom Handicap at Oaklawn, just getting nipped at the wire after leading into deep stretch. This will be her first time back on turf since running second in the (G3) Wiltshire Stakes at Santa Anita last June.
John Sadler is the trainer, Drayden Van Dyke gets the call to ride.
2020 Gamely Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Lady Prancealot Race Odds: 6-1
Irish-bred mare Lady Prancelot has spent most of the past two seasons racing in southern California, and has claimed three wins on the Santa Anita turf. Two starts back she rode a perfect rail trip to get the win going 1 1/4 miles in the (G1) American Oaks at Santa Anita, although last out she could do no better than fourth in the (G2) Buena Vista.
That race was only one mile, and the distance here suits her better.
Trained by Ricard Baltas, John Velazquez gets the ride.
2020 Gamely Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Mucho Unusual Race Odds: 8-1
California home-bred Mucho Unusual hasn’t been able to score a win in her last five starts, but has been in the picture, having run third last out in the Buena Vista and second prior to that behind Lady Prancelot in the American Oaks.
Since stepping up to graded-stakes competition last year she’s topped a 100-plus Equibase speed figure in seven consecutive races and could be a bit of a sleeper pick in this field.
Tim Yakteen is the trainer, while Umberto Rispoli will ride.

While I’m normally a fan of French fillies shipping over to run on the turf, I just don’t think the results are there to put Etoil ahead of this field, and I’m thinking she’ll be over bet. On dirt I think Ollie’s Candy is the best horse in the race, but I’m not sold on her turf form. So having said that, I’m going to bet Lady Prancelot for both the Win and Place and hope to get a bit of a price.
