2020 Carter Handicap Handicapping
With New York’s Belmont Park having opened this past week for spectator-free racing, there’s coast-to-coast graded stakes action on tap Saturday.
The feature on the 10 race card at Belmont is the (G1) Carter Handicap, for horses aged three and older. The race has drawn a solid field of 11 to race seven furlongs on the Belmont dirt.

2020 Carter Handicap Free Pick & Handicapping: Performer Race Odds: 3-1
Getting the nod as the slight ML favourite, Performer is a four-year-old colt with only five races to his name and four straight wins. The most recent of those was a 1 1/4 length win last November in the (G3) Discovery Stakes at Aqueduct, his first attempt at the stakes level.
He’s taking a cut back in distance here from his last couple of races, but does have a win sprinting 6 1/2 furlongs and has shown good early speed in his most recent starts. The seven-month layoff does raise the question of whether he’s in top racing shape.

2020 Carter Handicap Free Pick & Handicapping: Firenze Fire Race Odds: 7-2
A veteran of 24 lifetime starts, Firenze Fire spent time on the 2018 Triple Crown trail, ultimately running 11th in the Kentucky Derby that year. Distance was never his strong suit, however, and since then they’ve turned him into a sprinter with various levels of success.
He comes into this on the three-race win streak, although only the most recent of those came in a graded-stakes race, that being the (G3) General George Stakes at Laurel Park. He faces a much tougher field here in trying for his first Grade 1 win since 2017.
He’s trained by Kelly Breen, Manuel Franco gets the call to ride.
2020 Carter Handicap Free Pick & Handicapping: Vekoma Race Odds: 7-2
Two graded-stakes wins in his first four lifetime starts had Vekoma looking like a superstar in the making in early 2019. But a foot injury after running 12th in the Kentucky Derby put him on the shelf for the rest of last year.
Similar to Firenze Fire, the connection seem to think shorter distances are the way to go, and he made his return to the track a winning one in taking the seven furlong Sir Shackleton Stakes at Gulfstream Park in March.
George Weaver is the trainer, Javier Castellano will be in the irons.
2020 Carter Handicap Free Pick & Handicapping: Mind Control Race Odds: 4-1
After closing out 2019 with an impressive effort in winning the (G1) Allen Jerkens Stakes at Saratoga, Mind Control has come back to open 2020 with two consecutive wins in the (G3) Toboggan Stakes and (G3) Tom Fool Handicap, both at Aqueduct.
He won those races by a nose, a nose, and then 1 1/4 lengths, and it seems the seven furlongs is right at the limit of his distance.
Greg Sacco is the trainer, John Velazquez will ride.

It’s almost a coin toss between the top four here, and how Performer comes out of the long layoff will be a big key to this race. That said, I’m going to look at the other end of the starting gate and take Vekoma for the win, as I think he’s recovered from his foot problem and perfectly suited for the distance.
I’ll also play him in an exacta box with Mind Control.
